97 2.2 no start
Tuesday, December 11, 2007 7:37 PM
My girl just bought a 97 cavalier that didn't start. I got it back to the shop and started with the basics.

-compression 110-120 in all 4 cyl.

-pulled plugs and has spark

-plug wires are going to correct coil positions

-added fuel

-pulled the fuel regulator off the rail and the pump is pumping fuel. couldn't find the schrader vavle to check pressure though

-checked injectors with LED and they are getting signal

-cranked with no spark plugs and i'm getting a puff of mist out of each cyl that I'm assuming is fuel (every other rotation per cyl)

now it won't start even with the basic 3, so I started to look over things again. We noticed the spark seems yellow so we are thinking maybe a weak spark? Any of you guys see problems like that? Where should i look: coils? power to the coils?

I'm stumped and any help is appreciated

Thanks

i would check your wires one more time .. i had that issue. i kept saying my wires were right. but in fact they were put on in the opposite direction.

If you're looking from the back of the car from top to bottom, what should the wire order be on the coils? 2, 3, 1, 4?

I think that's what I remember from last night, I'll check it again tonight but the car is right.

car has around 150k on it and the wires/coils look factory, doubt they were ever off.

coils were split and rusted, spark was @!#$ compared to what it is now. no it wasn't the problem, but it couldn't have helped the situation.. the car kicked a ton more and tried to start after the new coils/wires

turns out it was getting too much fuel and flooding out. thinking maybe regulator is keeping too much fuel pressure or something, will look into it further later this week

once we decided it was too much fuel, we pulled the plugs and pump relay and cranked it over. then installed the plugs and cranked it over... while just touching the relay in place a couple times and it fired right up. then we plugged the relay back in and it ran great.

cheap car cause it wouldn't run, turns out it just flooded itself out instead of starting, i'm happy
