Motor Mounts

How do you know if a motor mount is bad? My car really jerks around alot. It is impossible to shift a gear smoothly. If I take my foot off the gas without putting the clutch in it just jerks and bounces about 15 times in a row. I know it is normal to do that a bit, but how much is normal. I've never had a problem driving any other car smoothly, just mine.
It's a 2004 Z24 5spd

Exept for the slight transistion you feel from accelerating, to decelerating or back, (caused by a small abount of driveling slack) ANY shuttering like your talking about is NOT normal. If a motor mount is broken, it could do that. It should be fairly obviouse by looking at one if it's broken. Make sure there's no cracks in the metal, the bolts are still there, and that there's still good rubber in them. Worn motor mounts shouldn't do that either, just if there broken off. To be honest....it could be anything between to engine and tires, I've never really heard of a car doing that only while coasting.

Oh, something else I forgot about. You haven't replaced to rear brakes recently have you? If you intall both rear shoes on one side, and both front shoes on the other from accident, it can cause the drums to stick sometimes and create the feeling your talking about.

Yes, brakes were replaced about 5 months ago, the dealership did it. but I'm pretty sure I just did the front pads. I'll go take a look and see if i can see anything broken.

Well my car bunny hops too if I am in gear 1 and I get off the gas at 8 MPH. I can very slowly roll off and it still does it. I think it's a function of gear 1 and the suspension, but if that kind of hippity hoppity is bad then it can't be the mounts because I took a good look at them and they were in good shape.

Yeah I can't see anything broken or cracked, god only knows what it could be. If I park it and leave it in gear I can only rock the car back and forth a little bit, a couple inches.

Ok, sorry if i revive this post, i dont know how old is it, but my car has the same problem as jonathan, till today.

today i figured out that it turns to be the upper motor mount, i have a 1995 chevy cavalier, and in every gear shift there was a "tack" noise, so today i open the hood, and move the engine with my hands, as the engine normally moves, (back and front) and there was the noise, and it turns to be the upper engine mount, so i took it off, to take a look, and SURPRISE the motor mount is a high tech piece............of SH$·&T, XD its an hydraulic or something, mount, it has oil inside, and some kind of check valve, so it acts like a shock absorver, and mine was broken, firts the rubber thing that acts as a diafragm, has a hole, so the oil, or hydraulic fluid was leaking, and second it has some kind of ribbets, and those where broken, so i do a quick repair and weld the two pieces together, (the two pieces that where hold together with the ribbets) and it works very well, im just back from a test ride, and now everything its tight, so im very glad wit the quick fix, but im pissed off with GM --......XD why in the hell they make that motor mount so complicated'? an hydraulic shock absorver kind of thing?? for a motor mount=??

well, thats all friends, i hope can be helpfull for anyone who has the same problem.

bye
