There is a whine on the passenger side when I rev up. I'm not sure what it is. I thought it was the power steering pump but my dad says it doesn't sound like it's that. I tried a search but I couldn't find what I was looking for...
any help would be appreciated.
Open the hood and have someone listen while u rev. That should help you locate the source.
belt tensioner would be my guess
Spray WD-40 on the belt and bearings of the pullies. If the sound goes away when u do one, then thats the one making the noise.
thanks for the help. I'll try that later today
I sprayed WD-40 on all the pullies and it's still there

I doubt that it's something that's going to hurt the engine, its just really annoying going down the road.
Maybe post an audio clip that could help us help you.
I'll try to do that. it may be in video form though.
is it a whine or does it sound like a chain clanging?
if it sounds like a chain, then suspect the a/c clutch.
if it sounds like a whine, i would think you have a bent pulley or tensioner.
1997 RedR - ZedR
it's most definately a whine. I'll try to get an audio clip up tomorrow.
high pitched wine?
Have you tried taking the tension off the belt and spinning the pulleys by hand? I have seen a an Alternator with a bad bearing whine before, sounded like an electric motor although mostly an alt would squeak with a bad bearing.
Did you still check the p/s pump resevoir? check the level and after it's run see if it's foamy.
When I have my A/C turned on.... it whines just like a stock supercharger on something like a cobalt SS..... just something to think about.
It could also be the alternator going out or just a really old belt.
Using a screw driver as a stethescope works pretty well if you have short hair and peripheral vision.
I threw in a supercharger while you were sleeping.. Merry Christmas.

My guess is also a bad pulley, especially the alt.

why on earth would you spray WD-40 on the belt??? i understand the bearings.
replace the tensioner....its not that expensive and its something that will eventually go bad anyway
To see if the belt is making the noise. Its a standard testing procedure for the truck shop i worked at.

that's what I thought.
The alternator is not making the noise, neither is the EGR valve. It has a brand new belt on it.. The power steering is fine.
so I'm going to go out on a limb and replace the tensioner. if that doesn't fix it. well then I guess I'll wait till whatever it is breaks and then fix it.
