A friend of mine has an 03 cavy and it stalled out the other day. It would start up fine and then it wouldn't idle very well and stalled out. Well I figured why not change the fuel filter and see what happens, since I know she often runs the gas really low before re fueling. To make a long story short I changed the filter and it started up fine. We took the car around the block and it seemed to run great. after idling for a bit it started to sputter a tiny bit. She backed up and started out of a parking lot(Wendy's in Dallas, PA) and it stalled again. She coasted to a parking spot and there it sits. Again it will start and idle really rough and then stall. I have no idea, so its going to be towed later today probably. anybody have any ideas?? q/c welcome.
fuel pump dieing maybe, how low does she run it?
there is a laundry list of things it
could be
yea she just had it towed and the mechanic said the fuel pump was bad...then he wanted to charge 420 for the part. I told her gmpartsdirect or any parts store has them for less than 300. We'll see if she listens...

slap a walbro in it and call it a day

my car just keeps sputtering. jumps from around 750-900rpms...stays most the time around 900 but jumps down to to 800 and even sometimes 750 sounds crappy...Its very noticeable with the exhaust. Is it probably the same thing as this?

it could be. try changing the fuel filter and see what happens. it costs like 7 bucks and takes 15 minutes to change. why not?
where is the stupid fuel filter? also how low does the fuel need to be, or does it really matter?
"Sunfire got stolen, all i have is the J to remember it by"
I had the same problem and it was the fuel pump.
... how about checking the fuel pressure at the strader valve on the fuel rail
i believe ~35 psi is good
jean, what do you mean by how low does it have to be? are to talking about changing the fuel filter or the pump
fuel level doesn't matter when chaning the filter, but if you are changing the pump, it makes the tank heavier the more fuel you have. i believe with the 3rd gen J's you still have to drop the tank(is that correct)? so unless you have a nice ol'e lift and transmission stands to support the 1/4 - full gas tank, i would start siphoning.
1 gallon of unleaded gasoline is ~6/lbs, although 25% lighter than water, it still adds up
Same thing happened to my 03 Cav. At first we thought it was just the filter, so we had that changed. Ran but sputtered and stall, so then I went and bought a new pump and replaced it, turns out that was the problem.
Don't ever run the tank empty. Fuel keeps the pump cool and running it down to where the light comes on is bad.
