DOHC engines, like the ecotec or the quad series (2.2 and 2.4), tend to have a "ticky" top end because the cams are up there. If its excessively loud, I would take it to a professional.

I'm not sure about the cracking noise, but what is the condition of all your bushings and your strut mount?

I've noticed both of my Cavaliers(01 auto and 98 manual) which had 2200(2.2) had a faint tick.
The manual tends to get ever so slightly quieter when the clutch is released.

No tick in mine or the gf's that I can hear, they both sound like normal smooth-running engines to me. Of course, OHV valvetrains tend to make more noise just by design.

on the 2.4 i would also check the timing chain tensioner shoe. that could cause a ticking sound on the passenger side ..
