Gauges shut down - Electrical Problem
Friday, October 12, 2007 9:38 AM
My main Gauges shut down which are the MPH RPM, gas, and temp. All are randomly shutting down frequently. They would suddenly start working then shut down... When this happened all the hazard lights "check engine" "service soon" "break" battery" ABS would light up.

I have a sound system with a capacitor and ran some tests without it. "same problem"

changed battery "same problem"

checked the alternator "same problem"

all thats left is to go into the cluster itself to see if there is some damaged wire

my question is, has this ever happened before? is there a solution???

BECAUSE THIS IS TICKING ME OFF!!!!

thanks

Sounds like a bad ground somewhere.

I seen a problem like this caused by a bad ground on the bolt where the ground cable from the battery attaches to the battery box. Check it out!

i had the same kind of thing on my 97 sunfire GT.
speedometer would drop to zero randomly. but RPM would keep working.
If i remember correctly it was the engine speed sensor in the tranny that gave out.
maybe that'll help?

well i guess i should of said the exact problem (duh on my part) ... the gas gauge doesn't move and the temp gauge is just over 100 f but defrost is nice and hot .. the car has 30,750 miles on it . no check engine light but service engine light came on just before oil change . I checked for codes ....no codes ..... speedo working fine ..... thanks for the info

!!!!!!!!UPDATE!!!!!!

Dealership has varified- 95-01 same wiring and pinouts( these older cars might need the dealer to reset the milage) , 02-05 same wiring and pinouts( 02-05 dashpanels from all sunfires and cavaliers interchangable, no reprogramming or loss of critical function. the only info lost is trip odometer gets reset to zero, but milage is retained elsewhere in the car's control units.) The dealership says that it's not worth the hassle of repairing the cluster, unfortunately they are costly. Installation is simple if you have ever tried to put a stereo in one of these cars the cluster is far simpler! It requires all the same tools and disassembly of the dash

So i took a gamble and purchased a new dash on ebay through a seemingly reputable seller and installed it. All problems solved! No side affects!

I even went one step further and purchased the 02-05 sunfire dash and plugged it right into my 03 cavalier! now i've got a bigger tach and red/orange instrumentation!
