Easiest way to remove A/C Clutch

What is the easiest way to replace an A/C clutch? I can't seem to find a puller anywhere around that I can rent. Otherwise when you try to take the nut off, the whole unit spins. Any ideas?

I never replaced the clutch... but I did replace the compressure (a new one comes with a new pully and clutch already on it).... and it's actually pretty easy.

Im not sure that you can get just the pully and clutch assemply by itself.

If your sure that it will come off if you remove the center nut.... this trick "should" work.

First of all... leave the belt on until the nut is loose since it should keep the pully stationary (i've used that trick with crank pullies before and it works).

Secondly... you will need to find a way to make the clutch engage while your loosening the nut so the compressure doesn't turn over.

If your lucky... just having the a/c turned on with they key on (engine not running) might work... but if it doesn't you will need to find the relay (or plug or whatever) for the clutch and jump it in order to force it on.

That said... I'm not sure how the pully comes off..... but if it turns out to be mounted the way your saying.... this should work......

just make sure you can even get the pully and clutch assembly by itself before you start.

You can buy just the clutch assembly. It's significantly cheaper than the whole assembly. I already tried to take it off with the belt on there. It just slips. It's on there tight. There is a special tool that is made to remove the clutch assemblies from A/C compressors. I'm just wondering where I can find one. None of the auto parts stores around here rent them.

Maybee a GM dealership could hook you up.... but It probably wouldn't be cheap. Autozone is pretty good for that depending on the store.

You might have to just end up buying one if their not too pricey. Or ask around ans see if labor for doing something that easy would be cheap or not.

Good luck man....

No, these special tools you speak of are sold from Mac and Snap On. Prepare to pay a pretty penny for them. I spent a ton of money for power steering pulley remover combo.
