I have a 98 Z24 (2.4L) and I just started getting a whine from the engine. It sounds like it is coming from the top right of the motor. I replaced the power steering pump thinking that may have been the problem but it did not help. I had the alternatore checked and it was still good. The batter is only about two years old. I had the water pump replaced about 1year ago. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Check the timing chain and tenisor
This is my 5 cents worth, (normally is would be 2 cents worth but I have adjusted it for inflation)
Car I drive:
99 Chevy Cavalier 2.2L 5 spd man (My daily car)
98 Ford Escort ZX2 4 spd auto
When I had the water pump done, they checked the chain and tensioner and said it looked good but that was a year ago...any other options before I go tearing into the motor?
I thought a tensioner or timing chain would make more of a ticking than a whine, almost sounds electrical but I cannot pin point the noise in the engine bay...
Would a bad air/oil seperator cause this sound?
Hehe...
Had the same problem a long time ago and it was sort of hard to diagnose. The whining gets louder as you rev up, right? What it ended up being was the idler pulley. Pulled one off my spare motor, through it on real quick and problem solved. When I took the OEM one off, it "chopped" when you spun it instead of spinning freely.
Same w/ my Grand Prix. Sounded like it was already loadin on boost at 2000 rpm in neutral. Turned out to be idler.
I checked the idler pulley and it was spinning freely. While I was tearing it down I think I found the issue...The was apparently coming from the EGR, is there a way to repair it, a new one is $200...
Does it almost sound like it is sucking air because my 2000 sounds like that.
The end result of arson.......

Its true that we dont know what we've got until we lose it, but its also true that we dont know what we've been missing until it arrives.
my alternator went bad a month ago and i put another one on off of my other motor and i started doin it too. i had it checked and it was good but the bearings were worn on it so it made the same whine.
take 2 foot piece of wood and hold it up to whatever you think is whining and hold the other side up to your ear. if it's inside the cam housing, you know where it is at least located.
I feel so indian doing that sometimes.
I'm back from the dead.
Currently Driving: RSX Type-S.
My Cavalier Burnt up :-(
Well I didn't take a 2x4 but I did use a long screwdriver...it sounds like it is from the EGR. I am not getting any kind of check engine light and the EGR is almost $200! I think I might wait for a light to come on but not sure it letting it be will harm the engine?
