The parking/brake warning light is on ('99 Cavalier). Just got new brakes about one year ago. Checked brake fluid level and it's full. That's about the most I can do as far as maintenance myself. Went to get the car e-checked so I could get plates renewed and they won't test it with the brake light on. Is there any way I can temporarily get the light off so that I can get the plates renewed? I know when I take it to a mechanic they are going to royally srew me. They always do. Thanks for you advice/help you can give me. Can I just remove a fuse? Anything simple would be appreciated.
it may be in the e/brake not all the way down or wire or something

Yeah... did you check your parking brake/emergency brake?
Thats the only reason that light would possibly be on...
I doubt a wire... but possible
Checked the parking brake, it's all the way down.
Pull the ebrake up and down several times see if the light goes off. Once I had to hit the parking brake lever when it was down to make the light go off although I believe it was because the rear shoes were adjusted too tight.
well if the brake light is on and not because of the parking brake, there must be a problem with the brake system. How do the brakes feel (are they soft)?, please let us know!
This is my 5 cents worth, (normally is would be 2 cents worth but I have adjusted it for inflation)

No, the brakes are fine, just had new ones put on last year. Someone told me the reason the parking/brake light was on because there was a short in the wire???? Don't know if this is true but all I want to do is get an emission test done so I can get my plates renewed. They won't test it if the brake light is on.
There are two wires that can set off that light. One comes off the brake booster, the other is in the center console and is attached to the handbrake switch. Either the handbrake switch is dead or there is a booster fault of some kind. I'd try messing with the booster wire first, it's easier to get to.
