So.. my car when I start it up it sounds like my engine is revving out of my car.. the rpm's shoot up to 2000 and sit there for a while. But while I'm driving, the gas consumption is still the same. And same with mileage.
Another problem is sometimes when I'm driving.. my t/c comes on. No reason just comes on.. I turn my car off wait for a few seconds. Turn it back on.. then it jumps really bad. Sounds like the tranny or something but y does the t/c come on?
Anyone have any answers or ideas?
seems to me like you might have a problem with the ecu or one of the cencers. Just a guess tho.

jenny,
it might be better to take it to a shop...
it sounds like you have the re-noun high idle problem, combined with a auto tranny, makes for some seriously hard shifts(or 'jumping')
read up on it, but the solution seems to be more than a 'sensor'

A.youre assuming that she has an automatic.
B. the "renouned high idle problem" is known on the manuals
my guess would be an IAT sensor if its an auto or possibly the IAC valve( manual or auto)
fill out your reg. and let us know what engine/tranny you have
And your gender relates to this issue and how we help you how...?

A. she does have an auto, as she states her "t/c" or Traction Control light is on. 5 speeds don't have this.
B. the "
RENOWNED high idle problem" is not known on just the manuals. the high idle issue can be a
SENSOR issue, or a vacuum issue. both manuals and autos have the same engine sensors and engine vacuum systems. also, both manuals and autos have the IAT sensor, so why you're saying that it's an IAT if it's an auto, I have no clue.
Jenny, the first check would be the IAC (idle air control) valve on the throttle body, TPS (throttle position sensor) on the throttle body, and vacuum lines. I also had a high idle problem on my '02 Z24 when it still had the 2.4 in it. I had a vacuum leak around one of the injector o-rings. pop off the air box that covers the throttle body. get some carb/injector cleaner (the spray can type), and as the engine is idling, spray around the intake manifold where it meets the cylinder head, and around the injectors where they go into the cylinder head. if your idle drops, then this is your problem.

You're supposed to drive to her house, fix her car and maybe when you're done, she'll wink at you, duh!

yes the IAT sensor can be the problem on either manual or auto, but if its an auto it causes the tranny to behave erratically
how does an Incoming Air Temperature sensor cause the tranny to behave erratically? I'm not trying to be a smartass... I just don't see the logic.

a maf can do this, but i don't see an iat doing this. there's actually a tsb on the 95-00 2.4 cavaliers that states that you can see similar symptoms in the transmission to what this person is experiencing by using an over oiled aftermarket air filter. difference being they would experience a limited rpm range.
i would personally rule out an ecu or any computer. the occasions where these go bad are very rare. it may be multiple different problems though instead of just 1. what kind of mileage is on the car? have you ever had your trans fluid replaced? do you keep up with normal maintenance? hard shifting can occur from dirty trans fluid. idk how bad the shifting is. could also be an issue with a valve (something in the bore or something along those lines) the high reving motor could be a lot of different things. if you're not really sure what you're doing than you should probably take it to a shop. with what you're giving for information it's really hard to narrow things down. we don't know what code is turning on the t/c light. are any other lights coming on as well? abs light? mil?
K... ! First of all guys.. thanks for the great responses!!! :-)
My car is a 2000 Cavalier Z24 w/ 158000 kms on it. I have had the trans. fluid replaced and flushed already. I do normal maitenance on it. The only light that comes on when it's doing all this @!#$ is the t/c light. NO other light comes on.. no engine, check fluids light nothing at all.!
If it is a sensor will it be easy to replace or do they have to put on the computer for them to find out what it is?
!!! There are some answers that you were all asking me.. .

I'm in no way being an ass, but when my IAT sensor went. My trac off light was one, and the cav would shift harder than if I had my B&M on level 2.
It also idled around 2200 RPMs.

no offense taken since i didnt believe it either. exactly like MD said it shifts really hard and mine made crazy noises.
someone suggested IAT...and what do you know i forgot to plug it back in.
Yes, the auto will shift hard without the IAC. I don't know why this is (the engine seems to otherwise run normally). I'd love to know why this happens. Maybe the force required to shift is greater in certain climates and the ECU is just compensating?

Oops, not IAC, I meant IAT.

Oh trust me, it does. I have a 97 Z, and there has been a few times where I've forgotten to plug the IAC sensor back in...and the auto tranny will shift gear to gear VERY hard. Why? Who knows, it just does.

jenny-does the idle return to normal(around 600-700rpm) after you've driven it for while? if it does i wouldnt worry about it much, my old Z24 did the samething.

Jenny I have the same problem with the High rpms. If it revs really high 1500-2000rpm at idle, then every now and then it goes back and forth from normal to 1500-2000rpms, or if it idles high, then when you rev it, it takes forever to go down, it could be your TPS (throttle positioning sensor) going out. Easy $70 fix. It's located in a funny position on the throttle body. I think it was the top. You have to forgive me i haven't seen my car in six mos. so.
In case this helps
This link says it is also part of the pressure control system in the transmission---pressure incorrect--shifts difficult

This is a link to lots of trac light faults on the Impala, you have to sort through the dross to read the good stuff.
Basically, for the Impala, the fault seems to be in the wiring assy to the speed sensors on the wheels being too short/attached with a metal clip-chaffing the wires.. In this link there is a reference to an improved harness assy to add on.
There are also a good number of posters who fixed the fault by disconnecting the connectors at the speed sensors and cleaning them--this may apply to the/your Cavalier
I noticed there were quite a few replacement bearings etc which really didn't cure the fault--and are costly
Hope this helps

if its a sensor it will throw a code.
I experienced a similar problem with my car if you take the car up to between 80 and 110mph for a mile or two youll get a check engine light when the code gets pulled it will say tcc circuit stuck on.
I lost all forward gears about 4 weeks later. I had the same thing traction controll light stayed on and the constant hard shifting
then it started slipping and finally i lost all forward gears.
your tcc circuit is responsible torque converter clutch operation.
as for your Idle problem id have to say its the idle air controll to be sure it isnt the pcm start the car disconnect the IAC and using a non powered test light check the connectors on the plug if the light blinks at all four terminals the pcm is ok.
there is a tool that you can use to manually test your IAC but I cant remember what its called off hand.
hope this points you in the right direction.
I just cant drive 55
