well on my 2.4 there is a fluid level check screw under the car, take that off, if anything drains out let it drain until it stops. If nothing comes out then you have the correct amount of trans. fluid.

Mine is the same as Dales. Dip stick style! Literally right next to your fuel lines.

Manual trannys rarely ever have the red colored tranny dipdtick your thinking of.

My car has the little (2 inch) dipstick with a white lock tab that folds over to keep it in place.

I think it's near the VSS and backup light switch. You usually won't notice it unless your looking for it.

I have an Izuzu also.

If nothing drains out, try adding some trans fluid because it could be low. Let the extra run out the drain plug.

Not what my mechanic showed me,if you take the plug off and nothing comes out it already has the correct level of fluid, why pour more in just to let it drain out?I did that before, thought it was low, poured in like4 quarts(I know, dumb)and guess what came out?,4 quarts.

you dont need to check the fluid unless you know there is a leak. if you think the fluid is low......do a search on changing fluid in the 4-speed auto and you will find the info you need. or buy a Helms manual

Do NOT do this (unless you have a vendetta against your transmission and want it to die). To check the level correctly:

1) Start the car and run it to operating temperature
2) While it's still running, unscrew the check plug
(located on the side of the transaxle pan, under the car)
3) The level is correct if a constant flow of fluid drains from the bottom portion of the hole
-If fluid comes gushing out, let it drain until it only comes out from the bottom of the hole
-If nothing comes out, add fluid into the fill plug (accessed by unscrewing a red knob located on top of the transaxle) until the fluid drains at a constant rate from the bottom of the check hole

First off, it might time for a new mechanic. Secondly, no kidding if you add four quarts then four quarts will come out. The level is being checked from almost the bottom of the pan, the absolute lowest level of the transmission (ie. where the fluid will naturally pool and sit).

OK...uhmmm. maybe I mistyped or something but I did exactly what you just explained, when i was having trans issues I filled it with more than 4 quarts actually and then took it to the mechanic, who IS not my mechanic, and he showed me where the plug was and when he drained it it gushed out.He capped it when it DID have a constant flow out of the bottom portion of the hole. The car was hot when I brought it in but why does it have to be running when doing this?Serious question as I am not a trans. expert

I'm saying, that's far from being right. If nothing comes out, your transmission is low, and you do not have the correct amount of transmission fluid.

With respect to the car running, almost every transmission, regardless of make or model, must be running while checked. As a more specific example, Dodge trucks and Jeeps must be running, and must be in neutral as well to get a correct reading. The transmission fluid is circulating while running, as well as heating up, thus affecting the reading. In a pinch, some people say you're okay to check the level within one minute of shut down, but being that turning the car over takes all of two seconds (unless you're waiting for glow plugs), it's best to just take the reading while running.
