I found a replacement engine for my 98' Cavalier.
The mechanic says it'll be $1200 for JUST the swap.
That doesn't include fluids, wires, ect anything else that may pop up.
Thats ALOT more then I thought it would cost to swap a engine.

Thats a pretty good deal....figure it takes a day and a half or two days to do the swap, at the average rate of something like $90/hour shops charge....
1. Find standard labor rate
2. Divide quoted total by labor rate to derive hours
3. If hours are justified by the job, proceed.
4. ???
5. Profit
1989 Z24 Convertible - Dust Covered
2006 tC - Dust Covered, but driven more
according to the labor manual at my job, it's 12.5 hours to swap a manual trans and 13.1 to swap an auto trans. figure the labor rate where i work of 80/hour would be 1000 to swap the manual and 1048 to swap the auto. again, that's before fluids or anything. that's strictly swap the engine and transfer anything not supplied with the replacement. idk what the labor rate at the shop you're going to is and i also don't know what he used to get a time quote, but it doesn't seem too far off. sounds like he's charging somewhere between 90 and 100/hour which isn't uncommon.
btw, according to your profile you have a 2200 so that's what i looked up times for.

you could always swap it in yourself, and if you don't really have knowledge of swapping engines find some friends that do to help out.
no more cavy...now 240 =]
I see a cool-air intake
It's got a NOS-fogger system and a T-4 turbo
I see an A.I.C. controller
It has direct port nitrous injection
Yeah, a stand-alone fuel management system
...Not a bad way to spend $10,000
wow.
Well I really want to swap it myself, but I don't know where to start, and none of my friends really know anything about cars.
SO I guess I'll have to just find a mechanic.
I'll shop around I guess.

Im sure there are more than just one mechanic in your area. Do some price comparing. When I lived in Pittsburgh, there were many places that would swap for $500. That wont include any misc. items like you mentioned. If youre gonna do the swap plan on buying all new hoses too. you dont want to reuse them.
to answer your question....I dont think he is ripping you off. its just what he charges. A lot of places will also overprice a job if they dont feel like doing it.
honestly, sounds about right to me. most of the shops around here want at least $550-800 to do a clutch/slave cyl. 1200 to swap an engine, i could easily see that.

You can always find somebody cheaper, but do you really want to cheap out on the heart of the car? If your mechanic stands behind his work and is reputable, then I'd say go for it.
Well I asked around today.
And everyone recommended this one mechanic.
I work at Mcdonalds so I asked ALOT of people today.
All local people, so I figure he's pretty trustworthy.
He said he'd do it for $700-800. Plus whatever hoses/fluids it called for.
I want to do it myself.
But I don't have the tools for it, esp not to get the engine out of the car.
So I guess I'll be taking it to the mechanic.

its really not that hard, to me the hardest thing for me was getting the cv axles out. other then that youll need a cherry picker and a garage or a place to do it. id say tools from 5mill to 22mill wrenches and sockets. the hardest thing is to remember were everything goes. you are just swaping motors right??
when i did mine i did everything motor and tranny swap so it was little easier just pull out and put in
Well as far as I know, cylinder #1 blew(literally, straight out the bottom).
So unless that in turn damaged my transmission/clutch. It should be a straight forward swap
I live in a VERY small town, I really don't have any mechanically inclined friends to help me.
But mostly my biggest set back is a lack of a method of getting the engine out.
