So apparently I need a new one. I've got 54k miles on the odometer, is this a usual thing for this mileage?
meh. they go bad. it happens. i've seen them go bad at 20k, and mine are still running fine at 113000. some last much longer than others.

Well, at least I'm getting a new one now. Let me tell you though, scared the crap out of me when it happened. I was just driving along and all of a sudden I lost tons of power. I pretty much was about to cry, lol.
I just replaced both of mine in January of this year and just had to replace another one last week! At least they are realtively cheap.
