I was just wondering what the symptoms are when that sensor goes bad. My check engine light come on and the code was for the o2 sensor after the cat. I was just wanting to know, Thanks.

I had that sensor start to trip the service engine soon light at 105 000 km on my 99 Z-24. My car ran great for 4 years with the light on intermittantly, then I finally had the sensor replaced. There were no other symptoms. Typically when an oxygen sensor is truly gone you will have a rotten egg smell from the exhaust and your car will be alot harder on fuel. This was not the case with my car. My fuel economy actually dropped slightly after I replaced the O2 sensor.
Maybe there is a way to clean the sensor and it's threads to hopefully stop the dash light from illuminating.

actually, the rotten egg smell comes from a bad cat, not a bad o2.

Do you have an aftermarket cat? If you do and you don't have one that is OBD2 or have the simulater it will throw a check engine.

the 2nd o2 sensor behind the cat is only there to detect if the cat is working properly. it does not control air/fuel mixtures.
so your car would run fine if that sensor was bad.

do hear any rattling in the exhaust, or any loss of power? if so..chances are the cat is bad.

epending on which one, yes you could. your fuel mileage suffers and you could in turn (from running too rich) clog your cat.

The post-cat sensor is just there to make sure the cat is working properly. It's not responsible for controlling the fuel mixture, only the first one is.

Symptoms: Your garage will fail to put a new sticker on your windshield around inspection time
