how to drop 96 fuel tank

so all the hoses are off, the electrical's off, and it looks like the tank's exit is being blocked by the heat shield, even though haynes said that was only 1999.

once i get that shield out of the way, i still don't really understand how it fits out - the support straps look like blocking any kind of exit. does it slide out the side of the car? or towards the rear?

any advice welcome.

nope, pretty much a little to the rear to clear the shield and straight down. i dropped mine on my rebuild because the pump froze. its rather easy. make sure you have it supported while dropping, otherwise it'll be a real mess.

really?? i just can't see how it fits - pushing it towards the rear to avoid the shield would leave it blocked by that cross-beam, at least that's how it looked to me.

i guess i'll play around a bit more tomorrow in the daylight.

Hope you got it sorted out. I recently did both a 96 and a 97. I found that it needs a little of both, to the right and aft to clear the heat shields. Once it slides a little to the right, that allows the aft to drop more. Then a little more to the right, and then down at the back, a few times until it clears the shields and the rear beam. Keep the sequence in mind, as it needs to be exactly reversed to get it back in.

My 97 Z24, you just slide it down & out the passenger side. It's easier if you remove the filler hoses from the tank. It's much easier to replace the tank if you drain/siphon most of the gas out first so you can move it up & around.
