VSS Replacement on 96 Sunfire GT

Like the title says, The car starts up and idles at about 3k rpms, and stays there, If i put it in gear the car accelerates by itself up to 3k. The code it threw is a PO502 which is the VSS. the car is a 1996 Sunfire GT 5-speed. If someone could let me know where this is located, and what is involved in replacing it, I would really appriciate it. Tried doing a search, but no luck. I don't want to take it to the dealership, but fear that it is inside the transmission, and really dread the thought of tearing the trans out again. The clutch was a PITA. thanks for the help in advance guys and gals,

Lenny

Sent you an email with the location of the VSS, itīs on the outside of the trans. and there is only one bolt retaining it.On the high idle there are plenty of posts search and you should find it, sometimes all it takes is some throtle body cleaner.

yes as mentioned its on the trans. i believe it has a purple wire coming out of it. when you pull it out look at the sensor and see if there are a bunch of metal shavings stuck to the sensor. if there is, start saving for a new tranny.
