Timing Chain

I was looking in the manual for my 98 Sunfire to see when I should start thinking about changing it. I could not find the information in the manual or online. I only have 60,000 miles on the vehicle, so I know I'll have quite a while, but it's still one of those things I'd like to plan for. Does anyone know when the timing chain needs to be replaced?

On a 2.2L OHV:

a) When the tensioner breaks/gets weak
b) If the chain stretches
c) Any time the timing cover has to be removed after 100K

Other than that, there's no set interval.

Thanks! It's nice to know I won't have to worry about it until it starts rattling.

It'll rattle before it breaks. Luckily, when the timing chains break in our cars they don't hit anything (well, majority of the time).

If you ever do gotta replace it, shell out for the dealer tensioner, I read online someplace that some aftermarket tensioners when they cool can loosen tension, but then tighten back up once hot again, dealer tensioners are a bi-metal construction and once they get a set tension, they stay put.

I have something in my 2.2 Sunfire with 184,000 miles on it making a sound like a chain being pulled through a come-along. I dropped my car off at a local shop to have the timing chain replaced and all the other goodies inside there while they're at it.
Thank god for credit cards. Yay me.
