I got a 97 sunfireGT and the pump is making a noise like when the gaz tank is empty. I going to do a trip with the car and i'm wondering if it could fail or good chance it will stay alive.

ive run out of gas before and my pump never made a diff sound.
I did have an MSD fail on me which made a horrible whining sound.
anyways to answer your Q.....If it doesnt sound healthy,I wouldnt take the chance. If it does break down, youre at the mercy of the shop thats closest or you have to pay a nice tow fee.
If it's whining, try replacing your fuel filter first. A plugged fuel filter can cause the pump to whine because it's working too hard. If that doesn't work and it's still abnormally loud, It's probably going out. It's kinda a toss up, it's good to be on the safe side, but pumps arn't cheap either. I'de say, if you can easely afford to replace it if the sound doesnt go away after replacing the fuel filter.. do it.
Well to be honest you probably shouldn't let your car get that low on gas, when my 99 cav gets down to 1/2 tank I look for a gas station to fill it up. My Dad had a 98 mercury tracer and he always waited till the fuel low light came on (at about 1/8 a tank) and he burned up the pump after 3 years of doing this, the dealer was the only one who had the pump $500 bucks for the pump not including installation, when it was all said and done a bill of $600 for everything. Not cheap!!!
I agree I think that your fuel pump is on the way out!
This is my 5 cents worth, (normally is would be 2 cents worth but I have adjusted it for inflation)
