A few problems with my '96 Sunfire GT
Tuesday, August 28, 2007 7:25 AM
I just bought a 96 Sunfire GT. The A/C didn't work, so the previous owner replaced the compressor (and I think clutch too) and got it recharged before selling it to me. Also the transmission and clutch were replaced at 100k. (Car has 120k on it.)

Now here are my questions:

1. A/C/heater hums loudly. It sounds like it's coming from the passenger side, which I think would make it the blower. Does it need to be replaced or can I just deal with the noise?

2. A/C lowest blow setting doesn't work, which from reading the sticky, it seems like it's the blower resister. Will this problem continue to get worse?

3. A/C doesn't get very cold. It's cold enough to where you can tell it's charged and working, but not as cold as my Mustang blows.

4. It sometimes has a slight grind when going into reverse. (Even from neutral, clutch to the floor, at a complete stop.) It also has a whine while going in reverse and a slight knock. Should I worry about this?

5. It has a light engine clicking. I can only hear it if I'm standing in front of it with the hood open. Any idea?

6. Has a slightly rough idle (not bad enough to think I'm only running on 3 cylinders though)

7. Lastly, what are signs of a faulty oxygen sensor? I know it can effect gas mileage, so this is more preventative.

Any input / comments are greatly appreciated!

1. My A/C whines pretty loud during acceleration. Is that what you are talking about?

2. Not sure.

3. My A/C will get arctic, so your system may not have been serviced correctly.

4. Reverse has been an issue for almost every car I have owned with a manual transmission. You can try going into 5th then reverse and it should be fine.

5. The ticking could be a number of things but usually not a problem. the valvetrain will always make noise as well as the injectors.

6. Could need a tune up but our engines aren't the smoothest at idle.

7. A faulty O2 sensor usually throws a check engine light. Did you get a check engine light?

2. You will loose other settings as time goes on, usually from slower to faster. It's a relatively inexpensive part to purchase, easy to install once you remove the passenger seat from the car allowing you to stretch out completely and work under the dash. You will need some small sockets (5.5 mm?) to replace the resistor.
