Are these the correct tools and specs for the install of a wheel bearing hub on the front of a 99 cavalier z24?
a) T-55 torx socket 3/4 inch drive
b) 30 mm deep socket 3/4 inch drive and 140 ft lbs?
Is a front end allignment necessary after this repair?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Not sure on the tools but 30mm sounds right and you tighten the hub mounting bolts to 44ft. lbs,Lug nuts get tightened to 100 ft.lbs.Looking at my Chiltons right now.

Thanks for the info. I replaced the hub today. The hardest job was trying to get the old hub out. Other than that everything went well.
Was it a 30mm for the nut?

I bought a 1 1/8 inch deep socket and it worked, and a T55 Torx for the mounting bolts. Now I have the tools for the next time as well.
Tried the 1 1/8 ,didn't work but 30 mm does.

Strange. 1 1/8 worked well for me. When I tested it out at the parts shop it fit snug. (28.6 mm = 1 1/8 in).
My 97 Cav Z24 needs a front wheel bearing as well. According to the tards in my Haynes manual I need to disconnect the stabalizer bar from the control arm, and then remove the balljoint to steering knuckle nut and seperate the control arm from the knuckle before removing the hub. I didn't think I would have to take all this apart. I thought it was basically taking the wheel off, removing the brake components and there is the hub...or am I wrong? I've never done a wheel bearing before but I have the basic idea. Also, will I need to get an alignment afterwards? I just had one not to long ago and would rather not have to have it done again if it isn't neccessary. Thanks.

You are pretty much correct, the wheel comes off, caliper and housing and the rotor. Which then exposes the hub unit. Using the Torx driver inserted through the largest of the 3 hole on the side of the unit remove the mounting bolts. But i think you will find you have to pull the steering knuckle forwards towards you to actually remove the hub unit.
And i was told when i did mine that behind the steering knuckle there is a boot which contains 3ball bearings and you need to make sure they are still seated correctly when putting it back through the steering knuckle. I can't remember exactly so hopefully somebody can elaborate on what i am talking about.
Also reading through a few how to's i cannot see anything about need an alignment but it is best to ask at a shop if possible just to be sure.

Well, I got my new hub/wheel bearing in today. Was a fairly easy task other than removing the old one..what a pain! Its nice to go down the road and not hear all that growling and humming! All I need now are 2 more Champion HR tires and I'll be set for winter. Thanks for the help, this board has been educational so far.

No, no alignment is needed, that is only if you replace steering components.
