ive done this before... if u have a 5 speed its cake if its an auto its somewhat of a bitch but can be def done without removing subframe thats a whole nothing job in itself. Just jack it up really high put jackstands (use a lift if at all possible) just keep trying the angle is the hardest part

You usually need a good set of crowsfeet, long entention, 3/8 ratchet, at least those tools

well sadly it's an auto. i wish it was a stick. but yeah i'll just have to try it that way. so basicly it's all about the angle u get the wrench on it from underneath?

A crowsfoot wrench is an open end wrench that has no handle, it has a little piece sticking out where the handle belongs that accepts the square drive of a ratchet handle.

What line is that that goes in to the power steering pump on a 2.4 the return or pressure line?

Ideally, a power steering pump should have both

I believe the threaded one is the supply (pressure) line to the rack... and the clamped on one is the return.

which power steering line and where is it leaking? my return line was leaking in the loop around (hard line was rusted). i didn't want to replace the whole line because i wasn't gonna be able to remove the line from the rack. so i cut the end of the rubber side of the return and use brake line cutter to cut the hard line that runs along the rack. slid the rubber on the hard line and clamped it.

Its the line that goes to the resivor. I cant tell where its leaking from but i know its some where in that area. I will wipe that line off and after a week or so its all wet with the p/s fluid.

here a diag of what i did. after the cuts i removed the unused portion. the area that rusted looks like what gm stopped using as a ps cooler (1st gens had ps coolers that rusted out often that ran under the pass front door). the loop looks like the remains of the old design. my cars drives fine and ps fluid doesn't leak, and for as small as a section you're removing i'm pretty sure theres no temp difference.

what i have noticed on my 97's 2.4, both lines, high pressure more so, will weep from the pores of the hose just sitting there. You can flex the lines and it does not get any worse or any better. I replaced them both, mine are auto and you can get them from the bottom side. PITA though. That short metal line from pump to hose, you should replace the o'ring on the end going into the pump.

Sorry to drag up an old topic, but I'm havign the exact same problem. And its leaking right on the elbow of that squre hard line that comes down by the pasenger side tire. I was thinking of doing the method mentioned, but I'm kinda worried about cooling ? And I was also thinking about cutting out the elbow and attaching a high pressure elbow joiner, BUT I ned to know the size of the hardline. My other option is to just replace the line, But I dont have access to a lift, I only have a jack and I was wondering if it's at all possible to change the line with just a jack and stands ??? Any help would be appreciated as I'm leaving tomorrow for holidays and in a hurry.
Thanks
