Idle problem
Monday, August 13, 2007 2:37 PM
It's a 2004 Cavalier.

Here is what the car does:

When coasting to a stop sign depending if I have been driving a lot the idle will stay around 2000 RPMS and drop to around 1000 RPMS and come back up all on it's own. Sometimes it will drop to a point just about where the car will die out.

This is all when I have the clutch pushed down.

Here are the things I have already done:

1.) Pulled throttle body of intake and cleaned.
2.) Clean IAC
3.) Browsed around for vac leaks which I couldn't find.

I have a very similar issue with my 2003 Cavalier. I ran Fuel System Cleaner through the car and the problem is not as bad, but it still exists.

At first, the car would often cut off when I held in the clutch. Now, it tends to drop to around 500 RPM and then rise back to 800-1000 RPM. Once or twice it has set at about 1300 RPM and then dropped back to 1000 RPM. And, every once in a while, it will actually just go to 1000 RPM on the dot and stay there.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any advice...

If you have the right equipment to check TPS readings, do that.

Wait until your engine has settled down to 900-1000 rpm and unplug your IAC motor. If the engine behaves when you drive it, it means your IAC is working, but GM's IAC code sucks and has somehow learned crazy trim values. I'm sick of it too. It actually drove me to build my own controller. Anyway, you can try unplugging the battery ground overnight and reattach it in the morning. The ECU will have to re-learn the right values, but usually a day's worth of driving is enough.

Where is the TPS located? No I do not have a tester either.

I really don't want to, but I may take the car in....

The TPS should be on the throttle body, but it's typically tested through the OBD port.

Try disconnecting the battery before taking it in. It may do the trick.

I have found out that there is a PCM reprogramming recall for my 2003 Cavalier. I'm taking the vechical in for service tomorrow morning. I'll post the results after I get home from the dealership.

I picked up my car from the dealership, and now the car seems to return to idle slower when I depress the clutch. I am experiencing the under-revving a little less(maybe I'm just imaging it being less), but it still happens.

It was worth a try...

I've unplugged the negative on the battery for a good 3-4 hours. Plug her back in with no change after the day. 3-4 hours is a good enough time for the computer to clear right?
