Need Help 94 Cavalier Tensioner Install
Friday, August 17, 2007 9:41 PM
Went to replace the Idler Pulley on my car due to bearing gone bad. When I was loosening the belt for removal the whole tensioner fell off the car. The manuals I have do not show removal/install or break down of this part of the car. Is there anyone who can tell me how to go about this as currently my car is going nowhere without this being replaced.

Thanks,

When you loosened the belt did you turn the tensioner center bolt :-

a) CLOCKWISE-correctly. It should be turned in the opposite direction from the way you would release a conventional nut/bolt

or

b) COUNTER CLOCKWISE-incorrectly

You should not exceed 30 lbs/ft torque on the tensioner center bolt (The book says, I think because it will all fall off as you have discovered.)

[The manuals I have do not show removal/install or break down of this part of the car. ]

Even the shop manual does not show this, a defective tensioner is replaced as a complete assembly.

It is probably possible to rewind the spring(Carefully) but the easiest route would be to go to a junkyard and get another tensioner assembly.

Unlss anyone else has a better suggestion.
