Guys, what do you think about a sunfire with only manual 1st gear, and reverse, with no speedometer at any time.... 4T40 auto. tranny... but when driven, will jump into second gear once in a while.....p.s. it's parked now, just noticed that when i got stranded on the highway!!!

Auto transmissions work with trans fluid pressure, id start by checking the trans fluid level or flush and refill replacing the filter.
its the VSS sensor, its broken or the wire to it is broken
jack up your car and look at the sensor on the bottom of the tranny, check the harness and follow the wire, its broke somewhere..
