2.4 timing chain
Wednesday, August 08, 2007 8:55 PM
My 1998 Z24 which had a full engine rebuild 2 years ago broke down the other day it would start(barely) but would idle very rough cough and sputter till it stalled I tried changing the plugs, boots, ignition coils and had the module tested, I took it to a shop they say that the timing chain skipped, they replaced the hydraulic tensioner and gave it back to me I drove it home from the shop(about 5 mins) and it ran fine, i tried to start it again later and was having the same issues again i took it back to the shop and it was the tensioner that failed again due to low oil pressure, they say that I should either rebuild the engine or swap another in. Any opinions on what the problem is or what I should do are appreciated.

Also can I swap in a 2.2 easily?

you can swap in a 2.2 but you will need to change over all the wiring

Sounds like you need to take it to a different shop, seems like they don't want to mess with it.I had mine done at the stealership and they replaced the water pump&timing chain.Had my mom drive it about 20 miles to my house and it was ticking.Took it back and found out that according to their manuals they were supposed to put a new tensioner on anyways.Haven't had a prob. since.I have heard of people putting new tensioners on and having them fail right away.

I have found there is 2 types of tensioners for the 2.4.1 piece, and a 2 piece. Factory is a 2 piece. When we have done cam swaps we have had problems with the factory not wanting to reset correctly. I have always replaced the factory one with a 1 piece one. Also the factory one does use oil pressure. The 2 piece does not require oil pressure, but has a spring, much easier to reset and reuse. I know there is some guys on the org who prefer the factory design, but I have had better luck with the redisgned one. Never had one fail.

Autozone...anywhere. Just ask for one from a 98-97 or 00-02... One is one piece one is two piece. I'm not sure which is which...at least at autozone.

I have found that the auto parts stores only carry the 1 piece one. The 2 piece seems to of been a factory unit.
