Sounds like a tire rubbing
Sunday, August 05, 2007 11:46 AM
2003 Sunfire
My passenger front wheel sounds like it's rubbing on something when I turn left and I can't figure out what it is. Nothing under there looks like it's being rubbed on.
In the past few weeks I've replaced:
all four struts
front strut mounts
passenger front hub
both tie rods
both front axles
The passenger side ball joint tests out fine. I can't feel any movement in it whatsoever. I don't know what in the world could be causing this noise.
I'm at stock ride height on stock wheels with stock tire size.
Anyone?

Ok this is a total shot in the dark as I might look stupid saying this because it won't have anything to do with it at all... I had the exact same thing as your describing, have a 99 Cav brought it into 2 different repair places, both heard the "rubbing tire" sound, and both searched EVERYWHERE but could not find out what was going on, replaced the bearings and everything. Anyways check your coolant, I ended up having to top up my fluid quite a bit. After I did that, the sound went away whenever I was turning. I have NO CLUE how that works. Also might want to check your power steering fluid as well. Please let me know what your findings are, cause if this fix works for you as well I'd love to know about it.

Also, if anyone reading this can please explain how topping up the coolant gets rid of a rubbing tire sound when turning the car, I would love to know what would cause that.

Mine was doing that.. They found a belt broken in the tire. I replaced the tire, the rubbing sound went away.

Wow seems like sometime i will look into the coolant be filled but i know my power steering is in good condition since it is checked on while getting my oil changes. But my 00 sunfire made rubbing noises to while driving. it gets to me too but i check it out and i see nothing nowhere near the tire. Odd how stuff like this is common with the jbo cars!

The weird thing is it only makes the rubbing sound when I make a hard left when going kind of slow.
I'm still getting a little creaking sounds from the passenger front when I turn right, but it only does it after the car's good and warm or if it's really hot outside. Although yesterday on the way home it didn't creak once. The only things that haven't been replaced are the ball joints. I'm going to tackle those tomorrow.

I won't know till I get around to replacing them. I'm suspecting them though because they're the only things I haven't replaced yet. I've rebuilt the entire front suspension over the past couple of weeks. My wife had been unknowingly driving on bad shocks for I don't know how many miles. All four were bad and over time everything under there became weak and wore out.
Oddly enough, it hasn't creaked at all the past couple days.
