how can i tell what year a 2.4 is? i got a parts car from a friend and when he got it someone swapped the 2.2 for a 2.4 and he has no clue what car the engine came from or anything about it. I wanna rebuild it and mate it with a 5 spd but i dont know witch tranny to get untill i know what year this motors from. So how can i tell what year the 2.4 is?
I was under the impression all the 2.4's shared the same bellhousing pattern. But then, the manual trannies didn't change till 2000, and the odds of your engine being a 2k+ are on the slim side, since it was only offered up to '02.
i believe pre2k (except for some 99's) should have an EGR.

pics would be the best way to go. like KOTL said, pre-2k's have an EGR setup, and is easily spotted from the top end of the motor.

99+ do not have EGR, 96-98 do have EGR. You can pick the tranny you want. Regardless of year either tranny will bolt up. Your call on what you want.

1998 and later 2.4L engine codes are locatred on the end surface of the cam cover while the VIN derivative is stamped on the bottom of the engine block in front of the transaxle extension. The 10th digit, counting from the left is the model year code. S=1995; T=1996; V=1997; W=1998; X=1999; Y=2000; 1=2001; 2=2002.
well on the FAQ post about swapin auto to manual it says that 95-99 and 00-02 manuals have a different bolt patterns

That is incorrect. I have put 2000+ engines in pre 2000 cars before. All 2.4's have the same bolt pattern for a tranny. You would need to be more concerned with what year car it is going in and what tranny will bolt in that car with the least amount of work.

For some reason I thought the last year you could get a 2.4 in a J-body was 2001. BTW can't you tell if the motor is a 99+ by the injectors? I've been told by GM that 98 and earlier had the fat injectors, and the 99 and later 2.4's had the skinny ones. (I replaced all my injector seals recently).

Yes you can by that way as well. usually the EGR stick's out to the eye more than the injectors.

It was still an option in 2002, but not many got it.

In the USA if you got a 2002 Z24 it was a 2.4.
