Code reader?

I have a 1994 2.2 wagon. What do you folks prefer for a code reader? It's pre OBDII and I only have one car that uses OBDII. What is the lowest I can go for reading the Cavvy? The car doesn't operate weird in any way but the check engine light comes on and goes off periodically. The jumper trick brings up nothing, and Auto Zone brings up nothing. 140K miles.

a paperclip'll do the trick.

use it as a jumper for terminals a and b. the only time you'll get anything from it is if the check engine light is already on. the computer in your car will not store any codes after you turn the car off, and if you DO buy a code reader for the car, you'll quickly realize that it does the same exact thing as the paperclip.

Been there, done that, no codes. BTW, I have a laptop if that's the route to go, you know, diagnostic cable.

no, its not. the ONLY info you're going to get out of it can be obtained w/ the paperclip. you'll ONLY get info from it when the ses light is on, and comes back on after you turn hte key off. if the car starts and the ses doesn't come on, you wont get a code.

Phooey! So I do what my dad suggested (replace the front O2 sensor) and hope? Having it go on and off occasionally does discourage my friends from borrowing it.
