I was wondering if theres anyway i can get rid of the light? In california u cant have any codes on in order to pass smog. I have a 96 with a 2001 engine im not worried about my actual car however; i found 2 cheap Pre 99 jbodys at a junkyard , considering 00 engine will most likely has less miles and less problems i would want to go that route. I want to sell the cars when im done though and its a little hard with a chek engine light on. Is it as simple as switching computers, or leaving the EGR hooked up ziptied somewhere or anything else?
wow no one? Im assuming i can just hook up EGR to a newer and and it will be good to go?
You should not have a check engine light one. Yes a 99+ motors do not have EGR, but they still have the ports for EGR in the head. You bolt the EGR up to the newer motor and plug in the sensor. YOu use all parts from the 96 (injectors, EGR, intake manifold, exhaust manifold and gasket, wiring).

Nah if that was the case air would be blowing out of my engine. I have the hole for EGR but on 99+ it doesnt go all the way thru the head.
pretty sure i need an EGR simulator
i have the hole for egr.. and it does not have a plate, so obviously it is already blocked internally
Listen to john, and use the old exhaust manifold and a pre 99 gasket. Thats what directs the gasses to the egr port on the front. Nothing internal blocks the egr. I just pulled my exhaust manifold off my 97 2.4l engine, getting ready to swap in an 01 2.4l, and you can see how the gasses get ported through.
i have the 96 gasket, and exhaust manifold (obviously a 2001 wont bolt up to existing exhaust) i have no egr block off plate, i have an open hole with no air coming out of it

Well from the sounds of it you also did not hook up the EGR valve on the new motor did you??? If not do it.

EGR=
Exhaust gas recirculation.. ive started my old engine WITH EGR with the egr alot of air gets passed through there and its loud..
right now i have the 2001 engine and NO EGR and no block off plate.. nothing comes out of that, the engine is blocked internally from egr its not as simple as a gasket
these are the napa online pictures of the gasket
pre 99
99+
The pictures are not from the same side but you get the point. The left side on the first picture is where the exhaust gas flows through to the egr. The left side in the first picture is the the right side of the second picture. You can see how the gasket extends out and blocks the hole for the EGR. This is how the motor was on the 00 oldsmobile that I am getting a motor from is set up.
heres a picture of 99-01 heads on ebay you can see the the hole on the left for the exhaust gasses to flow to the egr. Maybe you should recheck your exhaust manifold and gasket. But even if you do this you will still have to have the egr valve to hook up to get the CEL to go away.

I know what EGR stands for. I also know the head is not internally blocked (unless some modified it after GM made the head). My bet is you left the 2001 exhaust manifold gasket on the car when you put the 96 exhaust manifold on. SO no exhaust will flow through the head.

dude imma go stick a clothes-hanger in the hole and see how far it goes back, if you are correct i stand corrected this would be awesome if it worked! I bet it would be a bitch to change the gasket huh i dont even know where it is
stuck one in it seems to go pretty far it seems like it mite work, but how the hell would i go about getting my EGR since i dont have my old engine

plus how does EGR hook up besides the actualy valve i know theres some kind of tube going somewhere wouldnt it be a bitch with teh engine in already- damnit
My 99 head and 02 head both have EGR ports on the intake and exhaust sides. So if you had everything from your old motor......you would swap it all over...but since you don't.......
You could also, if you had HPTuners, Un-check P0401-0404-0405-1404 codes. Car wouldn't even know you had a EGR before.

Old Motor: 160whp & 152ft/lbs, 1/4 Mile 15.4 @88.2
M45 + LD9 + 4T40-E, GO GO GO
You will need
EGR
EGR mount
EGR wiring if it was removed from your harness
pre 99 exhaust manifold gasket (im not sure if you need the pre 99 exhaust manifold but just check to see if it has a spot machined out for the exhaust to flow to the egr port)
Flex tube that runs to the intake manifold
and I think thats about it, sounds like you need to take a trip to your local salvage yard
