Can somebody confirm this noise source? Opinions greatly appreciated!

Hello all, I have a 97 Cavy 5spd with 293000 KM.

The car started to make this LOUD clicking sound from the front left wheel area all of a sudden. Pedestrians look at my car wondering wtf?

Noise stops when accelerating or cruising but returns as soon as I let off the gas.
Clicking noise goes faster as the car speeds up.
Makes the noise turning or going straight.

I think it's the CV joint..... it and the wheel bearings are original parts. No humming noises to indicate wheel bearing problems.
Front struts & mounts were replaced early this year.

Thanks for any inputs!
gonna jack up the car tomorrow to have a look....

Jeff

Have you checked out the CV boots could have a crack in them, Also all the grease has been released, Bearings in the CV joint are wornout, Also front brakes could be needing replacement soon.

Good Luck.

I agree w/ the CV joints being bad....but what does that have to do with needing brakes??????

Thanks for all of your inputs!
I had a look and the CV boots themselves look perfectly fine but there is grease leaking past the metal strap thing on the outer boot...I found little chunks of grease here and there in the wheel well.

Guess I'm replacing it sometime this week, just gotta find a big torque wrench for that stupid axle nut.

Yep, leaky boot = bad or going bad joint
Good luck with the wrench. Maybe you can get lucky, get it bear tight with what you have, and drive carefully to the nearest tire shop and have them use one of their big-honkin torque wrenches on it. They'd likely charge nothing, if you have a compatible socket, just ask nice, and let them know the torque you need.

He suggested brakes because worn pads can make the same telltale sounds as failing CV joints or wheel bearings. Just a few days ago I had a terrible grinding sound coming from the front left wheel consistant with wheel speed, audible whether braking or not, worsening on turns and easing up on straightaways. Bad wheel bearing? CV joint? Nope, worn brake pads.
