2.2L swap on 99 sunfire
Monday, July 16, 2007 1:30 PM
I have made it offical. I am just going to do a motor swap rather than a rebuild because i found a 2.2 for $400. I just wanted to post in here to ask you guys if there was any troubles you ran into that I might aviod. I also want to know if it is 100% necessary to discharge my ac system. Are there any special tools I need other than a engine hoist? Also this would be my first time ever to do this, and it must be done in 4 days. Would that be enough time? Please post guys I want this to go as smoothly as possible. Thank you!

The swap is pretty straight forward then. I would pull the transmission with the engine to make life easier when you bolt the new one up. As far as the A/C, I've never tried it, but you can try disconnecting the A/C compressor from the motor and leaving a jack stand under it.

Not if you leave the system completely sealed, IE don't disconnect the suction/discharge lines from the compressor. Might get a little annoying with the compressor just dangling loose, but I've seen it done.

What is required to pull the tranny with the motor? and this can be done all throught the top? I am just asking because the steps in the Chiltons manual do it with the tranny in the car. If you say its easier tho and done it before ill take your word for it.

Will be easier on you to yank the engine with the trans still attached, you'll likely need to disconnect the brakebooster from the firewall and push it aside to make room, just leave the master cylinder attached.

okay well im already started. It says i need to "seperate the ball joints from the sterring knuckles. Using an appropriate tool, sperate the tie rod ends from the struts." Is this necessary??

Pulling the engine is easy when i pulled my 2.2 out of my cav i just pulled the engine and tranny right out the top i did not have to move the brake booster the tranny slid right past it. But you will have to remove the top engine mount and the tranny mount to pull everything out the top.

Yes this is necessary because you have to pull both Cv axles to remove the tranny.

i know its a little different but im currently pulling a 2.4 right now and in about 2 hours me and another org member got the coolant tank, ac, altenator, power steering, intake manifold, discharged ac, removed the belt and pulley and disconnect all the wiring. its not alot of work but time consuming. i never pulled a motor so he is helping me out. just start taking taking off large items like the manifolds, power steering and altenator. it will be much easier to pull the motor with the tranny attached. just becareful, the coolant will make a mess.

It is the lower engine mount, shaped like a dogbone.

pecos bull wrote:Do i have to disconnect brake lines and if so where at?

No need to disconnect those.

Try pulling the whole steering knuckle off and then give the axle a tug.

yah that was the trick i got the axle off on the wheel side. I used a punch to tap it out. I cant get it out at the transaxle tho. Can i leave them attached and maneuver them out of the way when im pulling the motor and trans? I tried pulling hard at the shaft on the axle between the two boots and it felt like i seperated somthing. Is that possible bc i have no idea what is behind thoes boots.

forget that last question i did a search and found my answer in another thread, i got them off. still would like to know if i could have pulled to hard and disconnected somthing behind the boot.

okay got all my mounts disconnected and started to pull. the transaxle side wont come free. the 2 mounts for the transaxle ( one mounted on the transaxle and one mounted to the body) wont seperate. ive taken the 5 bolts out from the driver side wheel well and been prying like a mofo between both mounts. still that little part wont come free. i need help fast.
