Monday, July 16, 2007 8:30 AM
Well ever since I dropped my 2.4 in my car last year, Ive been having trouble with oil leaking from my drain plug.. Even after new drain plugs, new gaskets, and EVEN a darn new Oil pan.. It still leaks from there.. I have it torqued to 19 lbs ft just like the manual says and still it leaks.. I even have a heaver weight oil.. Im clueless..

Anybody have any ideas besides jb weld? LMAO... <<---joke

maybe you torqued it to 19 in/lbs........other than that, if you replaced the oil pan, dont know what to tell you

Ive always just tightened mine as hard as i could.never had a problem. have you tried making it tighter than 19 lbs??

Are you positive the actual drain plug itself is leaking??

A leak elsewhere in the pan might drip off the end of the drain plug...

Red Devil, yup because when I look under there in the morning the oil drop is hangin between the actual head of the plug and the pan if that gives ya a picture.. Its dry on top of the drain plug... This is the only place the oil is coming from.. Ill check again in the morning... I tightned it up alot more.

Not jbweld, but you could always try teflon tape or a rubber washer. That would definitely stop a plug leak.

I wouldn't use teflon tape myself, theres a risk that some may end up in the pan and get circulated somewhere it shouldn't.
Is the plug gasket you are using just like the stock one? Should be sort of a metal washer with a rubber inner ring sort of fused to the metal. If it still won't seal, try a nylon washer instead.

agreed.........if your not using a factory plug, it might not have the right seal.

Yes, Im using the factory plug, it came with the brand new factory pan...

But, this morning.. Still, its leaking, gotta little puddle directly under the drain plug.. Dammmit..

ummmm........you're screwed.

I'm not under my car to look...but by some million to 1 chance is there something that could be leaking directly onto the drain plug???? if not you might have some gnomes that are loosening the plug.

lol nope, thats what i was explaining to Red devil, its clean everywhere else on the pan.. Even on top of the bung drain plug... Ill think of something..

thx

The gearbox has a drain plug?

At least with my 2200, the factory drainplug had no washer whatsoever. It didn't leak, but I had a problem with it stripping. I found a replacement at Pep Boys with a nice thick rubber washer on it. It might be just the thing for your problem.

I said that same thing. lol If I didn't see it myself, I woudn't have believed it, I should have snapped a pic. it's about 1" across and uses an allen key to loosen/tighten.

I'm starting to think that the drain plug isn't tight enough, or maybe it's mis-threaded. Either way, if you have changed the drain pan, then it can only be the plug itself not being tight enough.

just tighten it with a 3/8" ratchet. It is probably preferred by GM but come on, it pretty hard to tighten a drain plug to the point of it stripping the threads out...

Replace the rubber gasket on the drain plug.

as a last resort try a oversized drain plug. they a a little bigger that stock and cut thier own threads. I use to use them on dodge neons all the time(damn threads come out with the plug)

go to jiffy lube on a nice and slow sunday.

then, next time it leaks you can blame them.

LOL!

Oversize plug = metal shavings = bad

I couldn't believe that 18 ft-lbs. when my AmPro clicker clicked at 216 in-lbs. "18" ft-lbs. It's funny 'cause the wrench turn thing is in ft-lbs. but the markers are in in-lbs. I had to check the setting and try again, but really, 18 ft-lbs. is not that hard to do with a 3/8" equivalent ratchet. (The mini torque wrench is about the same length).

The oil drain plug is the lowest point on the oil pan, for obvious reasons, so if you have a leak ANYWHERE on the engine, the drips will come off that drainplug. If you are certain it's not leaking from anywhere else, then I'm stumped. You changed the plug, you changed the oil pan, that would have fixed any problem at the drain plug by process of elimination. My bet is the leak is somewhere higher up on the engine or tranny, and you just missed the trail.
