Hi!
I have a 01 cavalier and fairly recently, it's developed a strange noise. Whenever I shift from reverse to drive, a clunk is heard. Also, if you park on a hill, it doesn't matter what gear you're in, it makes a clunk.
I recently had the dogbone motor mount replaced a few months ago. Now it's developed this new noise... I was hoping somebody could be able to help because I think it's one of the mounts...but just wanted to make sure.
thanks!
My gf's car does the same thing, it's one of the mounts. You won't know which one it is 'til you check.

Check the torque stoppers.

Try setting your parking brake before you put it in park, and disengaging it after taking it out of park.
Sounds to me its either motor mounts or tranny mounts, Also even strut mounts, Inspect them all, Should find a solution.
Good Luck.
Thank you for all the great information. I have a funny feeling that it might be the transmission mount. Is there a way to check/test it without taking it off?
This how you test if youre mounts are shot, Put youre car into drive then, one foot on the brake pedel and the other on the gas pedel, You should feel extreme movement, Also rattle from the mount, Even that upper right mount is easy to inspect, You just got to take apart the metal bracket near the coolant resievoir, See if the mount is split or torn apart. Tranny mount is tested the same way as brake and gas pedel trick.
Good Luck.
Well I believe you need to check your trans fluid (auto), might just be a tad low.
And you'll normally hear a little cluck noise when parked on a hill from P to R, or R to D cause when parked on a hill, the car will tend to move just a little bit toward to bottom (slope) of the hill, thus putting a slight load on the trans before start up!
Also it could be that the new lower mount is so stiff (not broken in), that you can feel when the tranny changes gears. If youve ever done the poly mounts, it'll be the first thing you notice desides the vibes. (correct me if Im wrong)
Hope it helps
now DIE!
the factory mounts on the car suck to begin with. whoever put in the dogbone shouldve checked the other mounts too. even if you dont mod the car at all, i would recommend poly mounts.
Using your e-brake all the time BEFORE you put it in park saves the mounts from alot of abuse.....not just on big hills either....use it all the time
