I have a 97 z24 with 109,00 on it...havent had any probs with it except the water pump(what else is new?) Back in jan. i was rear ender at 60mph on the highway and pushed into another car. Cars totaled according to insurance, but still drivable...any who, since the accident and ive been smelling gas throught the vents when ever the a/c is on. I usually only smell it at low speeds, or idle. Could this be from a bad charcoal canister or what? its not leaking gas anywhere(to my knowledge) and I still get about 380 miles on a tank of gas, so im kinda at a loss....anybody have any ideas or had a similar problem? I like the smell of gas and all, but know when its blowing in my face. Thanks in advance!

to my knowledge I dont have any major exhuast leaks....maybe a small one right before the rear axel, but thats about it. The smell is really strong...smells like your pumping it at the gas station....straight unburned gas....

My gf's 99 cav had a similar problem.Instead the smell of gas would appear on the vent settings and not on a/c, it turned out to be her seal around the gas tank, as well and some solenoid in the tank. If its on the recirculation mode it sound like it may be something in the a/c..
Evap system. Is your evap canister behind the fuel tank damaged. If so, theres your problem. Evap system is fubarred.
For the love of God ... don't smoke or have anybody play with fire in your car! But yeah, its just probably a days work.

Hahaha on the don't smoke in the car....been there done that, didnt blow up...but then again the a/c wasnt on at the time....Greg Z, you have the most logical explination.....considering i was rear ended at 60mph.....the car took it amazingly well too.....i mean its totaled but all it really did was crunch up the frame rail on the passenger side. now that i think about it the gas tank wasnt bothered at all by the collision, BUT there is a charcoal canister behind the front pass. fender that took a pretty good blow when i was pushed into the car in front of me. could that be the cause of the gas smell? the canister is a rectangle that is taller than wide and has 2(i think) hoses coming of the top of it. something tells me that might be it....but im not sure....is that even a charcoal canister?? help is appreciated! Thanks!

Can you get any pics of that charcoal canister? The only thing that I can think of is the fuel filter.

Hmm, guess on the older cars the evap canister is up front then, mines behind the fuel tank, above the fuel filter, hence the reason I thought your evap canister was hosed from the rear-end crunch. But since yours is up front, and its hit, it may have been damaged enough to allow fuel vapors to release, which are then drawn into the passenger cabin, hence the gas stink. Does it ONLY do it with the AC, or does it do it also when, say, the Vent or another setting is on? If its AC only, thats rather baffling.
I've only noticed it with a/c being on, but I will look into it more with other vent options on. Ive run the defrost and haven't smelled it....I don't know...Its gotta be the charcoal canister, I'm just not sure.

The wreck may have damaged one of the hoses/tubes that goes into the canister as well.
