2.4 twin cam crank/main bearings??
Monday, July 09, 2007 1:03 PM
i have a few questions here about my 2.4 twin cam. it developed a wicked knock the other day that we determined was a rod knock. i pulled the oil plug and there are shavings on the plug. i drove it roughly 30 miles since the knock started. i would like to know if you think my crank is shot now and needs to be turned or if i can get away with just puttin in main bearings. and if so is it possible to do this with the engine in the car through the bottom or does it have to be removed? one last thing i am currently searching myself but does anyone know of a rebuild kit that wont break my wallet? any advice here would be helpful. oh and the engine is in a 2000 olds alero with 111,000 on it.

well, this really should have gone in the matienence forum, but thats ok. next time read about where certain things need to be posted.

30 miles on a rod knock... u POSSIBLY could be ok with the crank not needed turned, although.. i would plan on it, or buying a good reman from a auto parts store. remans usually run around $175.00 IIRC.

as for bearings, just get some stockers at the same place you get the crank.

your best bet would be to pull the whole engine out and dissasemble, it will be easier in the long run. you'll have to take so much off the engine to get the crank/rods/pistons out, its not worth the hasel of working in the engine bay.

There is no way to tell for sure if your crank can be turned or if it is beyond repair. Also if you have a rod knock that will ruin the rod bearing not the main bearing. The metal shaving may wear your main bearing quicker but it will probably not trash the main jornals to the point that they can not be turned. So all you really need to worry about is your conecting rod and where it bolts to the cranksahft.

You will have to pull the engine out to be able get to the bearings. Unfortunatly the way the engine is designed you cant just drop the pan and go at it like you could with older engines.

By the way this is a common 2.4 problem you probably will not find an engine in the junkyard and if you do it is a ticking time bomb unless it has very low miles. If you do find one I would not even touch it unless it has under 45,000 miles.

Well Wade is right in saying no way to guess at if the crank is good or not. I drove a car for 3 weeks 60 miles a day with a rod knock before pulling it apart. Guess what no turning needed, just polished it. Every motor is different. Also are you 100% sure it is a rod bearing issue? Metal on the drain plug is not a for sure tell. It can be common to have some metal on the drain plug at oil changes. Drain the oil and look for metal in the oil. Maybe glitter like look?

You can replace the bearings with the motor in the car, but that is suck a crappy way to go about it. If it is really a rod bearing there could be shavings all in the motor. Take it out and do it right. The main bearing kit for the 2.4 is about $90. You can usually find a nice mileage 2.4 for about $650-$950 to drop in. Good luck.

It's likely cheaper/easier in the long run to grab a running engine and swap it in, rather than trying to half assed rebuild the one that's in there. If you want something more than what you had, look into an ecotec swap.

Man its like a dialy comment now, if anything is worng its ecotec ..if anyon ehas a problem its ecotec.

Dont get me wrong, i dont really have a problem with ecotecs, and do realize its more cost effiecent to do the swap , but DAMN is it gonna come to the point were noone is gonna just do repairs or fix any problems and not do a swap??
i say this becasue i am at a point were i have to replace lifters in my 2.4 and i have 3 ppl daily saying it would be cheaper to swap in a ecotec, and i came to the point were i was with them. but after thinking on it, i think its gonna be worth the time and enjoyment of my s/c'd 2.4 to fix it and keep it around.. I love my 2.4 and i also like ecotecs,. but when it comes down to it...........

2.4's are gonna always hold a spot for me that a ecotec will never be able to fill

(man the ecotec lovers/owners are gonna bash the @!#$ out of me now) LMFAO
