I'm looking at this 01 5spd Z24, it's got like 180,000 miles on it.
I'm not sure though if it's had any parts replaced so far on it, i'm going to find out more about it tomorrow, but anyways, I know the older Z24's run like beasts all the way up in their high mileage, with minor problems and I was wondering if the newer ones (its an 01) were the same way or if i'm just going to be dealing with problems.
Also, if i do get this, what are some things I can do/replace/service to make sure it stays running like a champ....
just give it a tune up and replace the fluids? anything else? any specific products I should buy for high mileage vehicles?
Clutch if its still got the original. Remove and clean the TB thoroughly. Replace the plugs. Change the oil & filter of course. Change the trans fluid. Check the brakes, and would be a good idea to flush the brake lines. Fuel filter. Air filter or clean the aftermarket one if its an intake. Flush/fill cooling system. A/C system check. Serpentine belt check/replace if needed. Check clutch master cylinder fluid. Pretty much any sort of PM that you can do to a car, you should do to that one. Might take a couple weekends, but its good peace of mind.
atleast its 99+ fix that 3cyl. rod
Mine just past 190K I pretty much just completed all the usual maintenance and would also like to know if there was something more that I can do...

My 99 LD9 is dead from water pump going bad, and bad piston rings on cylinder number three. The piston rings are my fault.

Old Motor: 160whp & 152ft/lbs, 1/4 Mile 15.4 @88.2

Is there anything you can do to prevent the dreaded water pump?

keep up on your PM of the cooling system, never use radiator sealants,
im not near my car, nor will be for another week, but isn't t he water pump replacement PM at a point?
I would liek to remind people that the saying, 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' doesn't apply to a PM schedule. if it says to replace something at a mileage/time, do it.
if anybody has some extra tips,
i have heard of water wetter being pretty good, i think 'redline' makes it

replace it or get a 99+
You do not know what you are talking about. A water pump is a part that you should expect to replace on any car make and model if you keep it long enough. Also from your other response about the rod fix. Yeah again you do not knwo what you are taling about. The 2.4's off all years have been known to spin rod bearings. I feel it is more related to low, or crappy oil and abuse.
FU Tuning
it is low oil problem. people don't check their oil and the bearings overheat.
....i dont think i would but a car with 180,00 miles on it...but thats just me....I bought my z24 with 68,000 and now I refuse to buy anything with more than 50,000 on it....but like I said...thats just me.
Cavalier z24......A poor man's Camaro....close enough, right?
To be honest with you, I would not do it. I know The Big Three (gm, chrysler, ford) have really gotten into the whole "our products last a long time" reputation that toyota and honda and nissan have, but this is only recently that they have really started to take a part in that (as in, mabye the past two years as their sales have pretty much all been dropping) FOr one, 180K is a lil bit much. Even if the car was properly maintenanced, I just wouldn't really trust the car for any long period of time. I would only seriously do it if I got a pretty badass deal on it.
Again, I'm not biased to foreign automakers. My 97 gt has 155K on it and it's doing alright aside from the ton of maintenance that I need on it right now, though that is all due to it's age and is expected from any car with this many years. Although, I do have to say that the Izusu is really starting to act up. Still though, I don't expect the car to go past 168K or so.
Just something to think about. I really wouldn't want to get a fairly made american economy car with that high of mileage, and I would still be hesitant on getting a foreign car with that mileage. I only know of one car on jbo with over 200K and I'm not sure if it was a 2.4 or not.
