Mileage makes sudden drop
Monday, July 02, 2007 8:16 AM
Several weeks ago my gas mileage took a sudden drop from 34 mpg to 23 mpg open road driving and in town driving has also dropped from 24 to 19 mpg.
I drive these same routes weekly so it's not like something has changed in the distance or route.
The engine runs good, just changed the fuel filter to see if it would help and no change.
Have run three tanks of fuel through it all from different suppliers, still no change.
I use a ScanGauge II and there have been no error codes popping up, all appears normal except the fuel mileage which I manually verified using the odometer and fillup quantity.
Had the cat converter pressure checked which also shows good.
The car is a 96 Cav, 2.2L, 5 speed coupe with 135,000 on it.

did you check the air filter? My car a 99 cav 5 spd when the air filter gets dirty the mileage drops from about 33 to 29 mpg, I just get out the cleaner kit and re-oil it and the mileage goes back up (I have a accell kool blue air filter in it)

This is my 5 cents worth, (normally is would be 2 cents worth but I have adjusted it for inflation)

Car I drive:
99 Chevy Cavalier 2.2L 5 spd man (My daily car)
98 Ford Escort ZX2 4 spd auto

with a sudden drop of 11mpg I'd say your fuel pump is going...

or the o2 sensor is getting ready to take a dump,,,they cause mileage loss when they are bad.

^x2, and the front O2 sensor (the rear wouldn't affect mileage) tends to not throw a code till it almost completely dies. You might also check for vacuum leaks or a disconnected vacuum hose.

The 2.2's have an egr valve? I was pretty sure mine ('00 2200) did not.
