i had a hole in my radiator, so i bought a new one from DropTopPaul(DTP), and as im trying to install it today, i noticed there are no thread holes for 2 of the hoses that came off my old radiator.
here is the old radiator
here are the 2 threaded female holes
new radiator
no holes
and heres the 2 hose ends. look like they run to the tranny. so what do i do? are these hoses needed?
not sure whast to do. my first time replacing a radiator, and i dont do much with engine/performance stuff, so im kinda a newb when it comes to this. any help is appreciated!!
was the donor radiator from a manual trans car???
ya obviously the one is from a manual trans u need an auto trans one.. usually when u buy them brand new they have caps so they can be used with either
he can still use that radiator. All he needs is a separate tranny cooler. Thats not a big deal... You can find them on summit or at autozone or napa. I would say try and make sure they are the same thread for easy plug and playability.
seems like a pain in the ass to me, i hope u didnt pay over 100 for that rad. u can get one on ebay brand new shipped for 80-90 for the one u need.
got it for $100. i dont see anything under $150 on ebay.
anyone got a link/price for a tranny cooler? or any info on what needs to be done to make it work?
i dont think that one will work with the ecotec. ive been told the eco uses an engine specific radiator
thanks for those links!!
so this is new stuff to me...i assume it works like a seperate cooling system? like you have to fill the tranny cooler seperately?
sorry for the newb questions...but i never mess with this kinda stuff
its exactly that. Automatic transmissions work on a series of slip discs, while driving, especially during long runs thru traffic and town the fluid tends to get hot, much like your coolant. Manual transmissions can get hot as well, but they tend to take longer because there is less involved so many of them don't need coolers, hence the lack of a tranny cooler incorporated into the one from DTP.
thanks man....one last question. running thru the tranny cooler, is it just the tranny fluid? or is it coolant?
i assume tranny fluid, but want to make sure
you can try coolant, it would be quite interesting, to say the very least. I would recommend you just put in tranny fluid tho. Actually you may find the tranny to shift better with a separate tranny cooler, it will definitely work more efficiently and keep the tranny fluid much cooler than being integrated in with the radiator.
Use just tranny fluid, fill it just like you would if you didn't do anything unless otherwise stated in the instructions with the tranny cooler.
awesome, thanks guys!!! much appreciated
