So I searched most of the related threads and checked all that they said to check and I still have a leak... Its not leaking from the thermostat, the hard line that goes into that housing is not leaking. I keep seeing the leak from the drivers side of the back of the engine, its right under the left header tube. There is no wetness anywhere above the header, or to the left or right of it. its under it. any suggestions???
The thermostat on 2.4 is on the passenger side where the water pump is, if your car is leaking coolant from the drivers side it is probably the water neck or water outlet which is a plastic piece not very reliable and it has a thin O ring that seals, it might be fried.More precisely there are two o rings one for the water outlet and another for the hard line if you replace them use some petroleum jelly to lube them.
I discovered coolant leaking today from this general area on my 99 Z-24. Is it a lot of labour to resolve this problem? Is it possible that the leak could be from something else in this area or is this part a definate problem for leaks?
I think the leak could be coming from the heater housing hose.
this is a 2.4 right?
if you follow the water outlet plastic tube down to the fire wall, you can also check if your car is leaking around that area.
this plastic water outlet tube has one hose that goes to the radiator and 2 hoses that go back to the firewall and to the heater core under the header (driver's side)
they normally leak after you shut the car off or during idle.
it is difficult to see around that area, so you might need a light or something
Just finished fixing this type of problem tonight. Leak was coming from the plastic cross over between the two water hoses to and from the heater core. It would leak only after shutting the car off. To find it I crawled under the car with a flashlight and watched where it was coming from. It dripped out of the crossover to the auto trans and ran off the back of the atuo trans oil pan. I bought a new unit from dealership a no one had an aftermarket one. It came with the quick connect fitting.
You wouldn't happen to have the part number for that item? Was it expensive? How easy/hard was it to replace (time wise, difficulty level)?
I had a closer look and it is the o-ring at the water outlet that is leaking after all, not the outlet nor a pipe. How easy/hard is it to replace this o-ring? Do I need to drain some of the fluid out of the coolant system first? I plan on replacing the water outlet anyway because of it's age so should I use teflon tape on the threaded ends of one of the pipes that comes out of the water outlet or should I use some other product? Any other pointers to complete this job?

Problem fixed in about 1.5 hours. Good thing I bought the water outlet with the gasket/o-ring. It was broke inside.
O-ring on the pipe was alright but I replaced it anyway.
