pulleys killed my alternator?

well i got my aem alt pulley and my bomz crank pulley installed... i had the alt pulley on for about a month with no problems... i got the crank on last week and my idle seemed to fluctuate alot and finally today my car died out.. i tried to restart it but nothing.. so i got it jumped and i ran it for awhile and then it cut off.. so finally i restarted it and revved it and it has been fine since then...i took my car to my mechanic and he said that my alt is bad and is killing my battery. im gonna take it to him tomorrow but do u guys think that it's really the alternator?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faraday's_law_of_induction

I would think that you have just rediscovered this law Mr Faraday discovered.

"The resulting voltage is directly proportional to the speed of movement: moving the conductor twice as fast produces twice the voltage."

By fitting the Alternator and crank pulley, if they reduced the normal rotating speed of the Alternator, you have been reducing the output of the Alternator and gradually undercharging the battery.

I would think that if the battery is fully bench charged and the OEM pulleys are fitted the system will charge the battery correctly--or, you have to drive everywhere at high revs!!

So you need a high capacity (double the stock amps) alternator or a smaller pulley for that alternator to keep the battery charged. Or just go with stock pulleys.

[So you need a high capacity (double the stock amps) alternator] ----This will only work if it produces more output than stock at lower RPM

[or a smaller pulley for that alternator]----Yes, 'cos that would up the RPM's

The alt is probably not bad..... true it's not charging the battery ,especially if your running 2 underdrive pullies. Even with just one it wont charge at idle which some people can deal with. The best thing for everyday driveability is to get lightened pullies and not underdrive.

Pulleys alone didn't kill your alternator. The system plus the under driven BOMz crank pulley probably killed your alternator. Even with the AEM over driven pulley. The over driven AEM pulley was designed to work with the unorthodox under driven pulley. "That is what an AEM engineer told me." That combo will give you very close to stock alternator output.

Our just buy my stock sized light weight pulleys. I know they will not affect the alternator output.

MD.....did the AEM guy specify auto or manual?? I have an auto with the UR pulley and it doesnt charge at idle. I have the AEM , but Im afraid I would have even worse charging.

Well the engineer or technician I talked to said...."It was design to work directly with the unorthodox under driven pulley." Thats about all he said about unorthodox. I was asking him about bore sizes, and why AEM had two different sized bore holes....well at least they us to.
