I see a couple elec connections. Which one telld the fan to kick on?
The coolant temperature sensor would be the one your asking about. The ECU is what actually tells the fan to kick on via a relay, although I don't know wich one it is. There was a post here recently that tells you everything you need to know, but I can't remember what it was titled. I don't think my fan is coming on anymore either, but it never overheats, kinda wierd. (just gets a little warm after sitting still for awhile, about 3/4 up the gauge). Are cars must have magic cooling systems or something. I think SHOff was the one that knew.
It is turned on by a relay.
Your fan probably is coming on and you don't know it. The fan is forced on at 225, which is probably close to 3/4's of the way up the gauge. And your car should only get that hot when you are sitting...

So then it is normal to see tha temp gauge read that high? I know when mine reads about that high, I start hearing water boiling in the tank mounted on the passenger finder. I have a 2.2 but still...I though tthey were suppose to read about half way.....
The coolant temperature is sensed by the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor, outlined in red in the diagram in the link.
This info is passed to the PCM which will energise the relay to switch the fan ON when temp is high, A/C ON, etc.
The temp gauge should fairly closely follow the temperature of the thermostat you have fitted.
