'99 2.2 Cav 4dr

Sometimes the temp gauge will work, and other times it won't. 80% of the time it sits just above the 'C' mark, the other 20% it'll work normally. I've even seen it go from 'dead' to alive while driving, and back again.

Fluid level is normal, and I can't see/find any leaks.

Is this a common problem w/ the vehicle, or is it something more serious?

sounds like you have a bad temp sending unit!! I would replace it and that should fix the problem!
