Will this swap right in? I will have the whole car for a donor, less the roof.
he wants to put the 98 into the 97
2.2 is much more reliable
i would never go to a quad 4
they are just too problematic
if the 2.2 runs good are you selling it ?
i might need one
good luck

98 motor/trans into the 97.
The 2.2 has been losing power and the trans has been on the way out for a while. I posted a thread years ago about the speedometer ceasing to work. I didn't think it would last this long.
The donor car is a wrecked 98 z24. It has a jdm intake, magnaflow exhaust, and some sort of konin adjustable rear struts? He says it runs and drives great, just has no roof anymore. Hard to beat an entire parts car for 500 bucks. I imagine it will have power locks/windows, a/c, and a better power steering pump; which I do not right now.
Just how bad is the 2.4 compared to the 2.2. This car has mainly been downgraded to a 110 mile a day (minimum) commuter.
Do z24's have anything else I would be happy to be getting with this swap? Traction control maybe?
Now, I've swapped rear wheel drive motors/trannys before, and it was not too bad. But I've never pulled anything out of a front wheel drive car before. I've also seen what looked like the whole front drive assembly removed from cars before as a whole and sitting on the ground. Motor, trans, axles, brakes and all. Is it possible to swap the entire assembly like that???
Will the computers need swapped, along with the wiring harness?
Another question, will the 2.4 exhaust pipe bolt up to the 2.2 exhaust manifold? I'm thinking I may just have a clogged cat or muffler since it's gotten quieter and quieter as I've been losing power, and my fuel efficiency has easily halved. Accelerating is slow, and at a certain rpm, it will start cutting out. No upper rpm power, it's all low rpm.
i'm doing this very same thing but the LD9 i bought is being built up for performance. to swap the LD9 into your 97 ohv you will need:
Engine, Upper and Lower engine mounts, Engine Wiring Harness, ECU, Transmission, Transmission mounts (welding required), Shift cables, Shifter, Shift linkages, Clutch (hopefully the one in the donor is decent along with the flywheel). I'm about 98% sure that's all you will need but anyone please feel free to include what i may have mistakenly forgotten.
Hope that helps, Good Luck.

How many miles are on the 2.2? and yes that does sound like a clogged cat.

Thanks for the Info! So I suppose there is no way to remove the whole front and replace it huh? Whats the welding required on the transmission mounts for? Do you really need to swap all that shifter stuff if both rigs are 5spds?
I don't know how many miles are on the 2.2. It started having intermittant speedo problems at about 97k miles and it reads something like 120k now. Probably about 140-150k. miles. It's noisy and I don't trust it a whole lot right now. It's been a good motor though, I rev the piss out of it all the time and drive pretty high speeds for about a solid hour twice a day. Only have done minor external work to it over the years with a couple doses of sea foam. I do not do regular oil changes and havn't touched tranny fluid. I sense a bearing getting ready to let loose. Top end has been noisy for a while now. Still pulled pretty strong before this last problem came about.

The 2.2 is not more reliable than a 2.4. Thats crazy.
If you drop the entire subframe out of ther 98 it will bolt up in the 97. That will allow you to use everything and it is the easiest way to do it. You should not have to weld anything. I think the 2.2l and the 2.4l use the same engine mount placements.
Thanks guys.
I haven't bought that donor car yet, but probably still will after reading and seeing for myself that the subframe drops right down with everything I need on it.
The issue I was having was resolved with a new cat.
I drove the car 20 more miles to get the garage. It got worse and worse and finally wouldn't run anymore when the first of four tires hit the garage floor. We had to shove it in with the truck.
I replaced the cat, the front o2 sensor (cheap enough for a shot in the dark and possibly saving me from cracking the exhaust system open), and did plugs oil change and air filter.
Back and running stronger than I can remember for a long time. But there is something still wrong and whatever it is, is probably what killed the cat.
Low end power and throttle response especially suck hard. It actually seems like if I only push the gas peddle a tiny bit it could kill the motor. It will slow the car down slowly if driving (we're talking like barely touching the gas pedal here). If you were to quick hit the gas from idle, it would likely die. It definetly revs down before wanting to rev up fast. Higher RPM power is great though and pulls pretty strong now. The plugs I pulled out were blackened, but looked like I would expect from driving it a couple hundred miles with a plugged cat, till it wouldn't run anymore. My exhaust still sounds bubbly when revved and smells rich. I can hear small "tinging" backfires when using the motor to slow down or sometimes when just pushing the gas and revving back down to idle.
I personally find that the 2.2 is a more reliable engine. This is primarily based on experience. But more personal opinion
your new problem sounds like you have a vacum leak on one of the sensors on the throttle body. My 2.4 did the exact same thing with the push the gas and the rpm's go down before going up type of thing. Map sensor has a crappy rubber hose that was collapsed and cracked and all to hell. Replaced it and it runs fine now with 158K. Unfortunatly I have problems with my cat and some ringing noise in the pulley tensioner area. Gotta figure that one out now....
Went and pulled the codes today since my milage is still in the @!#$ can.
P0300 - intermittant miss
P1441 - evap system flow during non-purge
P0502 - speed sensor low signal voltage
P0507 - Idle air control valve (idle higher that expected)
The reader gave me a freeze frame also, which I had never seen before.
It told me this information:
Fuel System 1
Closed Loop
Calculated load
52.1%
Engine Coolant Temperature
188F
STFT Bank 1
23.4%
LTFT Bank 1
-5.4%
I.M.P

I know how to deal with them all except the p1441.
