A/C Help
Friday, June 15, 2007 12:02 PM
I read the sticky on a/c and am following the advice given. Let me tell you what is going on. My ac will not give cold air when it is in park (idle). It will give cold air while driving. My compressor (the one that is tied into the belt) will turn on and off aver few seconds. I took it to a mechanic who told me that my car had freon but that there is a cloged filter or something because the presure was to high. I dont know if what he said it true. I dont know how he could get an accurate reading with my a/c system turning on and off. He told me that it will be between $300 - $400 to fix it. What do you think I should do? Should I take it to another mechanic?

if you have cold air while driving and not at an idle, sounds like you are low on freon. if you sit at an idle and rev it up, does the compressor run more often and the air get colder? if so, add about 12 ounces of freon to it but get the can with the gauge on it so you can monitor the pressure. hope this helps.

I would check that both radiators are clean on the outside also and that the cooling fan is working when the a/c is on.

I will run cooler when i hold it at a few rpm's. The mechanic told me that i had freon. Im going to check with a second, Could i put freon myself.

my radiator is clean. for some reason when its idle my engine temp will start to raise.

What do you think?

Itīs normal that the temp raises when idling for some time, till the point when the cooling fan kicks on and lowers it a bit so the engine wonīt overheat, this cars are designed to run a kind of hot (needle in the middle) or a bit past it. If you have a clogged filter or sticking valve the compressor will shut off as soon as the pressure gets too high. Best bet will be to have the a/c serviced ( change of filter and valve, vacuum the system and get new freon and oil in it) and tell the guys to put some dye in the system to check for leaks and get a warranty.

How much should this cost me? Do you think that I need to buy every part in the a/c system and have some one replace it all? I think im better off adding coolent and then diagnosing what the prob might be. Adding coolant wont be a prob. I don't think that i have any leaks because i have had my coolant working for since the car had been manu.../ THIS IS MY plan: Add about 12 oz freon (R134) whatever the standard for my 02 is. than replace the whole system. . . Ill add more freon. Just wait and ill update. Thanks and keep mandaiting ill post updates.

Im also having problems with my A/C. It was awesome at one time, one morning it stopped blowing cold air. So I said to myself that it probably needs freeon or has a leak. Then winter comes allong and i begin using the heater. Works great. Suddently the fan will no longer blow air. -_- .... beh... So, basicly... from free on to the inner blower. I dont think the compressor its bad, it just wont turn now that its out of freeon.

I am not new to this car, but I hate mechanics because they lie, and they give a darn about how the results are. So, can someone help me out? Suggestions.

I took my car to a different mechanic. Turns out i had a bad radiator fan motor. I bought the part ($40) and paid $35 to have it installed. Now my a/c works fine. Plus my Engine temp sits a little cooler. Thanks for all the help here.
