ignition module???
Wednesday, June 13, 2007 10:09 PM
96 sunfire, 2.4.. I have had the car over 2 years now and have had the problem since i got it. The fuel pump will not turn on for it "prime" pump when the key is turned on. Has new fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, and a whole bunch of new sensors. It will finally turn on after i crank the motor over for like 10-15 secs. If i put a jumper wire on the fuel pump relay, the pump will turn on when the key is turned and if fires right up.. need some help please.... I am coming down the conclusion it is the ignition control module. I just dont feel like dumping another $150 into it and that not be the problem. Thanks

When you jumpered the relay, I assume you mean before the relay in order to verify that the relay is working properly? Check for proper voltage, continuity of ground, and zero shorts for the wires from the ignition switch to the fuel pump relay. The relay can't trip if it doesn't get an input.

Your ignition control modual, doesn't have anything to do with your fuel pump. It sounds like a broken wire issue between the ignition switch and realy like Fiero said. (the ignition control modual controlls the spark plugs)

The Fuel pump (and Injectors) are supplied from the 15 amp Fuel Pump and Injectors fuse, the ground point is G304.

The PCM supplies the +12 volts to energis(z)e the relay, which is grounded at ground point G110.

When you jumper the Fuel Pump relay you are priming the fuel rail and the engine starts immediately.

Can you swap a relay, a similar one to the Fuel Pump type, see if that cures the problem?

If ground G110 is clean check the wire from the PCM to the relay.

By the way, has the ignition recall been complied with on your car---the 10-15 secs delay to start MAY be caused by this---scroll to the second recall on the list---although the way it starts after being "jumpered" discounts this
