i own an 2004 pontiac sunfire and for the last couple of months my car has been acting funny. At 1st i was hearing a rapid ticking or tapping noise at 2000-2600 rpm during cruising. Then it proceeded to having the car sit in park and rev under the hood bout 4-5K rpm to hear the loud tapping noise. My friend who has listened to the car thinks it might be the valvetrain wearing out. The noise comes from the passenger side of the engine right under the end of the coil pack or cassette pack whichever you prefer and I could feel it when placing my hand on the pack! The last week my car shifts and revs fine but idles funny sometimes like making the tapping noise but then evening out. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

how many miles
I find it odd your vavletrain is wearing out, due to the fact we have tons of people on this site with over 100k, and some 200k on Ecotecs with no problems.

less than 50K miles...what could the sound be coming from?

Since youi say it is passanger side, and under the coil. Not to say you dont know where the sound is coming from. but I would remove the drivebelt and start the car.
I have seen pulies before come slighty loose and make all kinds of racket. I once saw a harnoic balance that was loose, and it sounded like the rod had a knock, it was just in need of a new pulley.
I havent seen it very often, only once in a great while but pullies sometimes do come slighty loose and make nosie,

i will have it checked

Replace your hydraulic adjusters and finger followers and I bet it goes away. I just had to do that and I only have 75K miles.

I used to race cars, now I race myself.

You have a 12 second car, I'm sure he is talking about a daily driver. I'm not surprised an Ecotec doesnt take to well to being beat the piss out of

Don't mind him. He is too lazy to figure out that I intentionally beat on my car to find it's limits. The Ecotec loves having the snot beat out of it.

I do delivery driving, which puts the hardest on any vehicle. I aged the 91 Explorer by two months in one week. If any problems are in a car, they will show up with a week of delivery driving. In the case of the old Ford, it was using up the PSF every day, and everything else the old bomber leaks (which is about everything). Now ye olde alternator is about to die.
When I drove a Dodge RAM 250 with a bad fuel pump for delivery, it sure showed it was bad after I got done.
My 93 Civic needed new cooling hoses, because the originals were all old and swelling and exploding, on a monthly basis. It also needed a new radiator, an alignment (12 tires per year) and bushings and motor mounts. I even broke the door handle once. Obviously the last owner kept it in the sun way too much,'cause the plastics and rubbers were deteriorated. But there were few things that had to be fixed, I just never got them completed all at once.
The 2004 Element, though, didn't take offense to my driving it. That rolling brick (or as my mum says, a toaster) is quite sturdy in an urban sense.
My Cavalier, so far, has not had any mechanical problems, just minor interior nuisances, Like the boot thing on the shifter popping off the console, or that darned ignition key button thing that always gets in the way, or how for some reason I can't seem to find the right spot on the wheel to reliably hit the horn.
