Ok i was told to give this a go.. my car has a knock coming from it when you turn it on it will only last a few seconds and then goes away until you get almost up to 3k in rpm's
I assumed it was a rod knock but I am told it could be other things. about 1000 miles ago i had a new timing set put on and all my mounts replaced as well. any idea's?
the engine is a 2.4 with a 4 speed as well (97 z24)

I have a 96 with a 2.2L and it knocks all the time, has for over 98,000 miles.
The knock sounds like a rod or wrist pin knock or as GM likes to call it "GM PISTON SLAP"!
At times before it warms up it actually has a ticking sound much like a bad hydralic lifter but it soon goes away.
The deeper heavier knocking sound comes from below the head so it is in the low end.
Now that my Cav has 136,000 on it and it runs great still, I do have a yearly oil evaluation done to check for excessive
metal fragments or contamination in the oil...nothing.
Drive the car and then put the clutch in, does the sound go away or continue?
I wouldn't say forget it, run it till it drops but your oil is a great way to see what is going on in your motor, it would be worth
a look see.
is a auto so no clutch.. the knock makes me cringe lol
Sounds like it's time to use the home made stethascope and listen to the engine and see if it's coming from the top or bottom end.
