Have an 01 z24 bought it used.. i never notice this problem below like 70mph but...

When im driving sometimes the speedo will just twitch like between 10-15mph off.. like if im going 80 sometimes it will twitch go to like 65 and back to 80.. I found it happends mostly as i LET up off the gas just a hair

But it also disables my cruise control because it tries to make up for it.. when it twitches it gives it more gas so its quite annoying

I already tried to replace the VSS.. is it possible its the actual cluster? and why does it affect my Cruise aswell? Could it be any major tranny problems? i drained the fluid when i got it and replaced the filter Thanx!

Have you driven the car without using the cruise? Does it do it then?

yes does it both times, its just that i CANT drive with cruise because it tries to compensate for the needle twitching

Pop you VSS out and see if it covered with shavings. Mine did this same exact thing until my Dif finally let out. When I tore the tranny down to swap out spiders, there it was. Shavings all over the VSS. It is magnetic.

Read plz.. WHen i took the old one out it had NO metal on it.. and i put a new one in anyway.. still nothing

Sounds like a wire has a bit of insulation rubbed off, and shorting out intermittantly. And it sounds like its the VSS wiring, time to break out a schematic and start tracing wires.

As to what johathan said, If you put in a new one but there were still metal shavings all inside the tranny the new one would get covered in shavings as well and not work good. I agree its probably wiring though.

When you replaced the VSS the first time did it look good or was it covered in crud?

Grr, Ok I am a bone head. I didn't see your reply to Nicholas Morgan's post AND i got the names mixed up. sorry about that.

Anyways, I had a problem once that would disable cruise. and made a speed twitch and RPM too. Although mine was a lot more subtle. Do you have a manual or automatic? I have and automatic and when I was driving I would feel the transmission slip and the engine RPM go up about 500 rpm. Also if I was in cruise it would disable cruise. So very similar to what you have. I found that there is only a few things that disables cruise control. One of them is pressing the brake pedal. This will also disable the torque converter and lead to a slight loss of speed and a gain in rpm. I had to replace an 11 dollar switch at my brake pedal and all my problems went away. This was the smaller of the two switches, not the brake lame switch.

Like I said though its not exactly your problem but it gives you a new avenue to explore.

ok well it does not DISABLE cruise.. it compensates for the irratic speedo in the way when it twitches it gives it gas... maybe its thinking im going up a hill or something to that effect.. anyway it still works but im sure its not a real gas saver.

i ordered a new sunfire cluster to swap in and imma better trace the wires.. its weird because its only at above 60mph..

i bought the car slightly modded im HOPING maybe he put some white faced gauges in or something and messed up the needed but i dont know how it would effect cruise, either way hopefully i can check out the vss wire and use a new cluster n solve the problem
