Missing gears

What's up guys? this is my first post and I hope you all are as helpful to me as I see you are w/ some of the other members. ok, here's the deal:

I have a red 95 cavalier coupe 2.2l 5-speed 109k miles. I was driving home from work. and I was just going through the gears like usual. and I went to shift from 4th to 5th and the tranny dropped into third. after closer inspection I realized I lost all my gears. except 3rd (which was up) and 4th (which was down) 1st, 2nd, 5th, and reverse were all gone. and like anyone who has been driving manual for half their life I just dealt with it untill I got home.

it's been 3 weeks since then and I managed to pick up a parts car. a blue 97 cavalier 2.2l 5-speed 145k miles. I bought the car for $200.00 off some guy w/ no job and 10 cars on his property. he said it had engine problems. he was more than happy to let me have it if I took it away asap.

now I have 2 busted cavaliers instead of one and I still can't figure out why the red one doesn't have half the gears it should.

has anyone had this happen to them? or know why it happened? or have any advice on how to fix it? if you guys could give some advice I would really appreciate it. thanks.

take the trans from the 97 and use it on your car.

That's the thing, I checked out the 97 Cavalier, and the tranny has different stuff on it than mine does. it has like an extra cable on the shift linkage. and mine has the output to it, but it doesn't have the cable. and I don't want to start pulling the 97 apart untill I know what's wrong with the red one. it's weird. the red one still starts up just fine and when I hold the link down onto the tranny it has all the gears but when I let it go it makes a loud popping noise and all the gears are gone again, technically I can still drive it if I want to take off from third every stop. I read a thread in the transmission forum out something like this but the guy said it was a bent shift fork. but that's like inside the transmission, right?

I got a date this weekend anyway, if my date asks me what's wrong with it I'll just say it's turbo lag... j/k lol. please help!

there is 2 cable for the shifter. if you only have one, one poped out and is hanging somewhere.

Find it and see if the plastic retainer is still there and put it back in place.
