Any Tutorials for fixing a power window?
Wednesday, May 23, 2007 6:30 AM
Hey all. About 6 months ago my drivers side power window went and now that its getting warm out it's driving me nuts!!

I've done some searching and heard that there are some good write ups available on fixing this problem yourself. I'm sure it's the motor. Can anyone post a link to a write up or tutorial for me?

That would be awesome... Thanks!

What do you want fixed?

You want a description on how to test the motor and switch, or you want directions on how to replace the switch or the motor. You didnt really give a description on what you wanted exactly.

Also no description on what the window is doing, comes off track, doesnt go down, goes down slow, goes up slow, what exactly is wrong?

Hey Rob.

Yeah, I guess I was a little vague. Sorry about that. I had the same problem with the passenger window a couple years ago -- the window goes down a bit, but goes up very very slowly (takes an hour or two to get the window up from 2/3 open!)

so.. "Goes up slow" sums it up nicely.

On further reading it looks like it might be better to replace the motor and regulator, but I still have yet to find a good guide or how-to.

There isnt much to it. Remove door panel, and there are bolts holding on the motor. You also have to drill some rivets out to, if you are replacing the regulator.

The basics:
1. Remove door panel.
2. Unplug old motor
3. Support the window so it doesn't fall (tape usually works).
4. Loosen the nuts that hold the window to its base.
5. Drill out rivets holding motor on.
6. Shoehorn the motor and assembly out of the door.
7. You need to remove motor from assembly, be sure to have assembly secured so that spring doesn't snap at you and take a finger.
8. Everything should be by itself, motor is no longer attached to assembly and you still have a finger.
9. New motor should have bolts to attach to assembly, put it together.
10. You'll need new bolts for when you put the assembly back into the car (to attach to door), try to find some that are somewhat short but stick through enough to get a nut on.
11. Put everything back together in reverse order.
12. Get a beer and some bandages and enjoy the working window.

Also, try not to bend the assembly. I managed to do it and since my car is a 'vert the back of my passenger window is about 1/4" off from where it should be.
